The FTC's Bureau of Competition enforces the nation's antitrust laws, which form the foundation of our free market economy. The Bureau of Competition is seeking experienced attorneys to fill multiple vacancies in its Litigation Group, focused on federal district court and administrative litigations in collaboration with the Bureau's various offices. Duties

As an attorney in the Litigation Group, you will be principally focused on federal district court and administrative litigations involving some of the Bureau of Competition's most complex and high-profile cases. Litigation Group attorneys may appear as supporting or lead counsel in federal district court trials and administrative hearings, and routinely support all aspects of contested litigations, including pre-complaint legal research and case assessment as well as all phases of the civil discovery process. Candidates should have significant experience in complex civil litigation matters, and successful candidates will likely have relevant trial experience. Experience in antitrust matters is preferred but not required. Candidates should demonstrate excellent legal research and writing abilities, strong organizational and analytical skills and excellent oral communications skills. Candidates also should be able to work effectively with other people, exercise sound judgment, and exhibit a strong interest in the work of the agency. More specifically, incumbents of this position will: Conduct all phases of antitrust merger litigations and litigations challenging anticompetitive conduct, including acting as lead counsel when required. Advise Bureau of Competition leadership on litigation strategy, including researching and identifying viable legal theories to challenge conduct that harms competition. Prepare internal documents for review by the Commission and perform special assignments as directed.

  • Possess a J.D. or LL.B. degree from an accredited law school.
  • Member in good standing of the Bar of a state or territory - US, PR, DC.
  • The position may be subject to completion of a two-year trial period.
  • This position is designated as eligible for remote work. If selected, you must be approved for remote work prior to onboarding in accordance with FTC's Workplace Flexibilities Policy
  • If approved for remote work or telework from a regional office, your salary may change based on your official duty station.
  • This position is not in the bargaining unit.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements Applicants must have attained the first professional law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) from an accredited law school and be an active member in good standing of the bar of a state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory. Applicants must demonstrate excellent writing skills and be able to work effectively with other people, exercise sound judgment, and exhibit a strong interest in the work of the agency. Additional Requirements Ideal candidates will have significant experience in complex civil litigation matters in addition to excellent legal research and writing abilities, strong organizational and analytical skills in presenting written arguments and excellent oral communication skills. Antitrust experience and experience in federal district court trials involving complex civil litigation is highly desired. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work effectively with other people, exercise sound judgment, and exhibit a strong interest in the work of the agency. GS-14 Positions For appointments to attorney positions: active member of the bar in good standing and 42 months of legal experience after graduation from law school. GS-15 Positions For attorney appointments: active member of the bar in good standing and 60 months of legal experience after graduation from law school. Note: Legal and nonlegal experience gained in the Federal Government before completing law school does not satisfy post law school experience. requirements. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Only experience and education obtained by the closing date of this announcement will be considered.
