Position is located in the Emergency Department (ED) as an Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA). This position serves as an advanced technician for patients who are present for treatment.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Observes patient status and keeps licensed personnel informed of any change in condition.
Provides geriatric-specific care.
Performs Patient Transport with or without cardiac monitor.
Administration of medication.
Assists licensed personnel with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations.
Responds to medical emergencies as a part of the Rapid Response Team (RRT), Code Blue team, or medical transport team.
Initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS), use of automatic external defibrillator, and assists with airway management using bag-valve-mask (BVM), oral airway or nasal airway.
Performs Cardiovascular monitoring to include: providing support, relief, and coverage as needed to central station telemetry.
Recognizing lethal rhythms/arrhythmias (i.e. ventricular fibrillation and asystole) and immediately notifies appropriate staff.
Collects specimens.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: The work requires a level of physical fitness that allows for standing for extended periods, heavy lifting to position patients, and manual dexterity to perform clinical procedures. The work will require recurrent bending, lifting, stooping, standing, squatting, stretching, sitting and walking.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Performing observation-based screening and collecting patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel; Completing clinical reminders, obtaining patient health history, chief complaints, medication history, and identification of health-related conditions that may impact the patient's health status; Complete approved templates and tools, such as the outpatient intake form, normal result notes, and follow up treatment protocols established by the agency. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 1 full year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement, with a major study in hospital administration, public health administration, or related fields such as business or public administration with course work in health care administration. OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education described above.
To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-07. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
Preferred Experience:
2-3 years ED experience in the pre-hospital setting
2-3 years EMT or Paramedic experience
