Duties
Directs all operations of the House Press
Gallery and provides fully developed staff recommendations for changes to
facilities, personnel, equipment and budgeting. Oversee the approval of
applications for membership and enforces rules and standards of conduct for
newspaper reporters covering Congress. Works with the Standing Committee and
liaisons with the Speaker’s Office and appropriate committees for overseeing
the physical condition of the press gallery. Ensures inquiries from reporters
and congressional staff regarding current information and historical
perspective on House floor and committee activities are addressed adequately.
Oversees the process of maintaining an up to the minute log on the daily House
proceedings, along with files of current and historical legislative activity.
Ensures that press releases and committee notices are posted in the gallery or
on its web site, with a copy of each member's release distributed to the major
news wires. Facilitate reporters’ coverage of committee and subcommittee
meetings by working with committee staff. Ensure ample work space for reporters
covering committee meetings, provide copies of hearing testimony and write and
distribute the daily schedule of House committee meetings to major news
outlets. Helps enforce rules of coverage in gallery and other House facilities.
Familiarize Members, staff and Congressional committees with daily gallery
operations and services and the workings of the Congressional Press Corps. Help
credential reporters and assign space at national political conventions.

Qualifications
Advanced degree in journalism or a related
field or equivalent congressional or journalistic experience. Fifteen years of
experience in journalism or managing a similar operation. Comprehensive
knowledge of congressional procedures and processes, as well as a thorough
understanding of how journalists work. Thorough knowledge of interaction
between journalists and the Congress. Politically astute and able to reconcile
and balance contending interests and personalities. Budgeting and computer
skills. The ideal candidate would also have a strategic vision for the future
of the congressional press corps and the House Press Gallery.
