The Policy and Strategy Section (POL) is seeking an experienced attorney for the Attorney Adviser position. The attorney selected for this position will be dedicated to assisting with the Section's policy and strategic efforts related to areas under the Civil Rights Division's authorities, including education, employment, housing, voting, and criminal justice.
Duties
As an Attorney Adviser, your duties may include:
Developing legislation, regulations, policy, testimony, and other related documents to advance the legislative and policy missions of the Division.
Analyzing and responding to requests for review of proposed legislation, regulation, and policy proposals.
Coordinating with other Justice Department components - including U.S. Attorney's Offices - and agencies on implementing the Division's enforcement, strategic, and policy initiatives.
Engaging in education and outreach activities and strategies to internal and external stakeholders about important civil rights issues and Division priorities.
Advising leadership on the development, recommendation, and execution of assigned Division strategic and policy initiatives.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a J.D. from an American Bar Association accredited law school, be an active member of the bar in good standing (any jurisdiction) and possess the minimum years of post-professional law degree experience commensurate to the grade level of eligibility, as shown below. Applicants also must have strong, demonstrated qualifications in the following areas: academic achievement; substantive knowledge and expertise in the laws, rules, and regulations applicable to the work of the section or substantially similar laws, rules, and regulations; written and oral communication skills; the ability to analyze complex issues; skill and experience working collaboratively and productively with others; organizational skills; professional judgment; initiative; and the ability to excel in a fast-paced, demanding environment. In addition, applicants must have outstanding professional references.
Possessing the minimum post law degree legal experience does not guarantee the applicant will be selected at that grade level.
GS-13 - minimum 1.5 years post-JD legal experience
GS-14 - minimum 2.5 years post-JD legal experience
GS-15 - minimum 4 years post-JD legal experience
Preferred Qualifications:
The following demonstrated qualifications are preferred but not required: knowledge of federal legislative, regulatory, and policy-making processes, including experience working in or with Congress or the Executive Branch; experience drafting or analyzing legislative, regulatory, and policy proposals; and knowledge or experience working in two or more areas of the federal civil rights laws enforced by the Division.
Education
All academic degrees and coursework must be completed at a college or university that has obtained accreditation or pre-accreditation status from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools that meet these criteria, see www.ed.gov.
