Duties
VISN 12 is committed to fostering and sustaining an environment which celebrates diversity, provides equitable opportunities for employment and promotion, and supports inclusiveness in our culture. Together, we strive to create and maintain working and learning environments that promote professional growth and teamwork, and are inclusive, equitable and welcoming. We embrace our differences as individuals and unite as a team toward a common goal: to serve our nation's Veterans.
The Ambulatory Surgery Unit (ASU) Float Staff is responsible to float between ASU Recovery Room (RR) and Interventional Radiology (IR) departments. ASU specializes in elective same-day or outpatient surgical procedures. Patients undergoing procedures in this unit typically do not require admission to the hospital and are well enough to go home after the procedure. The Registered Nurse working in the Recovery Room cares for patients undergoing various surgical procedures. The role of the RR nurse is to provide care for post-operative patients recovering from anesthesia. The staffing mix in Recovery Room (post op) area consists of Registered Nurses (RNs) and Healthcare Techs (HCTs). All patients who receive anesthesia care/conscious sedation will be admitted to the Recovery Room by specific order of the anesthesiologist responsible for that patient's care. Patients are temporarily admitted after a surgical procedure and receive specialty care during their recovery. In addition, patients having anesthesia procedures/conscious sedation in the GU clinic, Cath Lab, or Interventional Radiology departments may also be recovered in the Recovery Room. The ASU Recovery Room utilizes 8 monitored recovery bays.
The RR nurse provides care for the adult and geriatric veteran that have undergone a surgical procedure requiring post anesthesia care for the following surgical services: general surgery, otolaryngology (ENT), orthopedic, ophthalmic, peripheral vascular, plastic, podiatry, urology, gynecology, and pain.
The RN has technical and operational knowledge and clinical skills to function as a Recovery Room nurse in all services listed. The RN is directly responsible to the designated Clinical Nurse Manager.
The Interventional Radiology (IR) department is a procedural environment that provides care for patients who require radiology interventions, diagnostic/therapeutic procedures and post-op recovery. Their role includes but is not limited to initial and ongoing physical and psychosocial assessments, synthesis of data from various assessments, such as monitoring devices, laboratory results and imaging reports, patient advocacy, strict observation of infection control guidelines, moderate sedation, medication administration, airway management skills and patient education. The IR nurse will execute medical regimens including administering medications and treatments prescribed by a licensed or otherwise legally authorized provider (Illinois Board of Nursing).
This position potentially requires flexibility in schedule and assignments, as this is a 24/7 hospital. Some positions require rotation of tours or indefinite work on non-administrative tours as established by the immediate supervisor. Not all duties may be listed, so other duties may be assigned.
