The VA Caribbean Healthcare System is seeking an experienced and dynamic Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner. Ideal applicants are those who want to contribute to the achievement of quality care standards, as well as the growth and development of a VA academic hospital program.

As a licensed, independent provider, the NP practices autonomously and in coordination with health care professionals and other individuals. This clinician is accountable for addressing a large majority of health care needs and practicing in the context of family and community in the Urologic Program.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Performing comprehensive outpatient and inpatient history and physical examinations, writes medications and nursing orders, sends consults to other services, discharging patients and writing discharge summaries, and follows patients in the clinic.
Prescribes and/or recommends laboratory tests, diagnostic studies, and/or medications based on current medical center, VHA, and DEA policy and within scope of practice.
Provides age-specific care that is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, cultural and chronological maturation needs of the patients.
Evaluating patients with wounds and made recommendations relating to dressing changes, participates in decision making on patients scheduled for surgery, and schedules patients with the operating room scheduler, assists the surgeon during surgery, and writes prospective orders.
Evaluate patients in the preoperative period, prepare those patients for a surgical procedure and help provide follow up after the procedure, both in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
Other duties and responsibilities for specific specialty areas include, but are not limited to:
Provides health care to selected patients with chronic, stable conditions or acute, episodic illness related to the Urologic Practice, including, but not limited to, genitourinary pathology, prevention and early diagnosis of genitourinary cancer, genital infectious conditions, sexual dysfunction, male reproductive disorders, etc., in diverse settings, focusing on health promotion, disease prevention, health maintenance, and disability minimization.
Work Schedule: 8 Hr Shift, Monday - Friday (Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor. The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility/patient care needs).

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Must be a US Citizen.
English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:
The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN)- formerly known as the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) -OR-
The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). -OR-
The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. -OR-
In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Master's or Doctoral Degree from a program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission (ACEN-Formerly NCLAC) or the Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). (Transcripts Required)
Registration: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Nurse Practitioner (NP) Certification: Must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a NP in a State and maintain full and current certification as a NP from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the same specialty as this position. (Copy of NP Certification Required)

Preferred Experience: Clinical experience in Urology Specialty.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level III: None beyond the basic requirements- Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II: Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN or bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience. -OR- a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III: Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN or bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. -OR- a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.
Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.

Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019. This examination is administered by VA Occupational Health. This position requires moderate lifting up to 44 lbs., carrying objects up to 15 lbs., frequent reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, hands and legs, use of cranes and motor vehicles, walking & standing up to 8 hours, bending and climbing and able to hear whisper. The incumbent must be physically, emotionally and mentally stable in order to efficiently perform the essential functions of this position without hazard to themselves or others.
