The Watervliet Arsenal is an Army-owned and-operated manufacturing center located in New York. It is the oldest, continuously active arsenal in the United States having begun operations in 1813. Today it is relied upon by U.S. and foreign militaries to produce the most advanced, high-powered weaponry for cannon, howitzer, and mortar systems. The Arsenal is the only location in the DoD that has a weapons research facility (Benet Laboratories) collocated with a manufacturing facility (Arsenal).
Duties
Plans weekly and monthly work schedules and sequence of operations for subordinates.
Establishes deadlines and priorities on the basis of general work schedules and methods and policies established by higher levels of supervision.
Instructs subordinates in new procedures, and provides advice when problems arise.
Reviews work in progress or on completion.
Adjusts plans, assignments, and methods as necessary to accomplish the work as effectively and economically as feasible.
Develops performance standards, counsels employees on performance, and makes formal and informal performance appraisals.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position involves duties which are subject to Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations regarding hazardous wastes.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- Due to the nature of this position, employees may be required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Machinist Supervisor without more than normal supervision which includes: (1) Supervising or leading artisans in a manufacturing/ industrial environment; (2) Setting work schedules, establishing priorities, and reviewing employees work in progress or upon completion; (3) Planning work sequences to have work completed by established deadlines; and (4) Experience with machining processes, equipment and tools to explain machining operation requirements, methods and procedures. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below.
