Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center is a campus-style facility consisting of 125 acres with 25 major buildings. The incumbent serves as Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic within the HV AC & Refrigeration Section of Engineering Service performing a variety of maintenance, repair, and installation tasks throughout the hospital to carry out the mission of Engineering Service for Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center. Duties

The incumbent installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs electrically driven, high and low-pressure air conditioning systems, their components and their control systems up to 1250 tons Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs all auxiliary air conditioning equipment consisting of chill water pumps, condenser water pumps, glycol circulating pumps, cooling towers, control air compressors, refrigerated and desiccant type air dryers, pneumatic and electric control valves, variable frequency drives, digital and pneumatic variable air volume boxes, electronic air filters, electric and steam humidifiers, automatic and manual water treatment systems and components, exhaust fans, air handlers, air balancing accessories, etc. The incumbent installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs complex and facility wide PC based building automation and facility management systems involving the interfacing of electric, electronic, electromechanical, direct digital and pneumatic controls; must be able to perform testing and balancing of both air and hot/chilled water flow systems, using such testing equipment as is appropriate The incumbent must be highly proficient in the reading and interpretation of complex technical manuals for each piece of equipment within their responsibility; must be highly proficient in the reading and interpretation of mechanical, electrical, and electronic schematics and blueprints of HV AC systems and controls. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent will be required to work from ladders, scaffolds and platforms to perform duties; will be required to perform work in hard to reach places which will require him/her to stand, stoop, bend, kneel and stretch; will be required to frequently lift or carry parts or equipment weighing up to and over 50 pounds. The incumbent's work is done inside and outside and is usually dirty, dusty and greasy; occasionally makes repairs in areas where temperatures may range from -20 degrees to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of broken bones, scrapes, burns, infections, infectious diseases and the hazards of asbestos; maintains and repairs large systems and is subject to escaping gases when making emergency repairs.
