This position is located within the Horticulture Unit, Park Operations Department at the National Zoo (NZP). NZP provides professional and technical services directly affecting SI through public impact, thereby fulfilling its mission to enrich the Smithsonian experience through exceptional gardens, animal exhibits, collections, and education.
Duties
The Engineering Technician (Irrigation) operates, maintains, installs and renovates the computerized irrigation systems at the Smithsonian Institution National Zoological Park, including irrigation system installation and maintenance such as locating and troubleshooting existing components, determining if systems are functioning properly, and making repairs.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 or equivalent and above):Examples of qualifying specialized experience include technical work in: drafting, surveying construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems.
Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as:
Planner and estimator who analyzed designs for production purposes. Instrument maker or model maker who performed design or development work on devices fabricated.
Certification:Engineering technicians may be certified by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies, an organization sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers. Certification by the Institute will be helpful as a measure of the technician's quality of experience.
In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:
Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as programming computerized irrigation systems including troubleshooting components and making field repairs; providing technical leadership in performing field inspections; and preparing reports and making recommendations to internal and external audiences.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.Or Education: Education is generally not applicable for the substitution of the 1 year of specialized experience. However, two full years of graduate education or a master's degree may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position.
