The Lead Medical Technician serves in Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service, Central Alabama Veterans Healthcare System, Veterans Health Administration, Department Veterans Affairs, Columbia, SC.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties include but may not be limited to the following: Major Duties and Responsibilities: Interacts with Veterans, their families, and staff in a professional and courteous manner. Monitors the outpatient phlebotomy room to ensure Veterans have minimal wait times. Monitors inpatient STAT, timed and routine requests to ensure timely collection. Works with Phlebotomy Supervisor to develop and carry out orientation, training and competency assessments; and participates in the interviewing and selection of potential new employees. Monitors inventory of supplies and consumables, placing orders as necessary; and documents complaints and problems and forwards the information to the appropriate individuals for investigation and corrective actions. Lead and Administrative: Greets and screens patients at the outpatient phlebotomy check-in desk. Checks patient identification, looks up lab orders, calls clinics if necessary to clarify orders, accessions tests into Vista/CPRS, Instructs patients on proper specimen collection techniques. Prioritizes STAT, pre-op, Chemo or other urgent orders. Distributes the workload among employees in accordance with established workflow or job specialization, assures timely accomplishment of the assigned workload, and assures that each employee has enough work to keep busy. Keeps in touch with the status and progress of work and makes day- to- day adjustments in accordance with established priorities, obtaining assistance from the supervisor on problems that may arise, such as backlogs which cannot be disposed of promptly. Specimen Collection/Receiving/Processing: Collects urine samples for both routine and culture testing; properly instructs patients in the collection and handling of the specimen to be collected; and delivers the specimens to the appropriate accessioning area for processing. Processes all incoming laboratory specimens, ensures all specimens are collected correctly, at the correct times, and in the correct order of draw. Ensures all specimens are properly labeled and identified throughout the entire specimen procurement process to maintain specimen integrity. Assists in the collection of pre-employment drug screen specimens; collects Chain of Custody urine specimens. Explains procedures, ensures collection of urine specimen per protocol; prepares specimen for processing; and accurately completes required forms. Performs other duties as assigned. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. and SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-5: One (1) year of specialized experience that equips me with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position at the GS-5 level. To be creditable, the experience must have been equivalent to the GS-04 level in Federal Service. Specialized experience includes experience that may have been gained in (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the positions being filled. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE GS-5: Have successfully completed a four (4) year of course of study to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least twenty-four (24) semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position being filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) OR COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE GS-5: Have equivalent combinations of creditable specialized experience and education as described in one (1) and two (2) above to meet the total experience requirements for the Medical Technician position. Combination of successfully completed post high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. Physical Requirements: The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring lifting (sometimes in excess of forty-five (45lbs)), walking, bending, or standing. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of the workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, such as in a laboratory, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity, such as exceptional hand/eye coordination, or color differentiation. The Lead Medical Technician will be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields to moderate risks.
