Duties

If selected, you will serve as a Legal Administrative Specialist (Litigation Support) providing technical and analytical assistance to support the litigation needs of the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) for the Western District of Washington. At the full performance level, typical work assignments will include: Consulting with litigation team members (e.g. attorneys, investigators, legal support staff) to understand case needs and technical requirements; Using specialized software applications to perform processing tasks to meet the technical needs of criminal and civil litigation teams; Using basic and complex document review database functions such as coding, tagging, advanced searching, sorting, filtering, and analytics (e.g., threading, stemming), and advising litigation teams on these functions' use; Preparing audio and video files for production, including by using software applications to edit audio and video files or to convert such files to useable formats; Advising and supporting litigation teams by identifying and implementing appropriate technical solutions to manage commonly found and complex or non-standard electronically stored information in civil and/or criminal cases; and Performing quality control on electronic discovery productions and diagnosing and resolving any identified issues. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.

Qualifications

GS-7: To be eligible at the GS-7 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education, OR a Combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience include: performing routine litigation support assignments such as assisting with organizing case information; preparing common electronically stored information productions for discovery (e.g., PDF files, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint files, emails, etc.), as well as scanning and coding documents; assisting attorneys in preparing for court such as preparing electronic versions of exhibits; assisting in the use of technology to organize digital evidence; and editing a variety of legal documents. Education: One full year of graduate level education in a related field (e.g. Criminal Justice, Law). Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. Superior Academic Achievement: To qualify based on superior academic achievement, you must have completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree (or expect to complete within 9 months) from an accredited institution AND have one of the following: Class standing -- must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses. OR Grade-point average (G.P.A.) -- must have a grade-point average of: a. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or b. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum. OR Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society. Combining Education and Experience: A combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described above which when combined equal 100% of the requirements. GS-9: To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education, OR a Combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience include: assisting attorneys with trial preparation, including making recommendations on how to proceed with trial presentations; utilizing office automation tools in order to create physical and digital trial presentations; working with investigators, agents, and legal support staff to determine strategies to meet litigation needs; handling a wide variety of evidence and discovery; generating basic electronic discovery productions (e.g., bates-numbering images with redactions and searchable text); and managing and operating a variety of computer hardware such as printers, plotters, audio-visual devices, and other state-of-the-art equipment to conceptualize exhibits and complete special presentation projects. Education: One of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law): a Master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B. or J.D.); OR 2 full years of progressively higher graduate education leading to such a degree. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
