This position is in Nutrition and Food Services (NFS) located in a Charlie Norwood VAMC. The Health Technician (Dietetic) (Ambassador) primary purpose is to provide administrative and customer service support for the VA hospital food service program. The incumbent performs routine duties that require exceptional customer service, computer skills, proper phone etiquette, proficiency in special food service and therapeutic diet procedures, a broad knowledge of routine modified diets.

Duties

Duties of the position include but not limited to: Comprehensive knowledge of human nutrition requirements in health and disease, dietetic principles, concepts and methodologies. Prepares all patient menus, makes appropriate diet changes prior to meal tray line service start. Conducts meal rounds on units after tray delivery to ensure patient satisfaction and provides service recovery and meal corrections when needed. Adjusts diet patterns and menu selections to assure the correct meal tickets are generated. . Communicates with Registered Dietitian or Dietetic Technician as appropriate and communicates with supervisor to complete all task assigned such as production/menu changes, menu specials, or menu shortages. Utilizes COTS Dietetics Software programs to retrieve diet orders, recipes, and menu and inventory data. . Prints, prepares and reviews meal tickets according to facility procedures. Retrieves computerized information/printouts to assist with tray and/or nourishment assembly such as standing orders, nourishment labels, tabulated recipe lists, and other simple information to assist in meal delivery. Computer skills. Checks patient tray for accuracy of requested items, portion control and allowed items on modified diets. Practices excellent customer service skills in communicating and assisting staff, patients, other customers from a wide variety of backgrounds. Handles routine telephone inquiries from nursing units/nursing personnel regarding patient meal orders and maintains a log of telephonic client inquiries/concerns received directly from the client or unit personnel based on local policy. Adheres to facility policies and standard procedures for patient feeding, including but not limited to missed patient meals, late tray requests, patient meal ordering, and adherence to prescribed therapeutic diet. Organizes work to meet time constraints. Cleans and maintains Nutrition & Food Service equipment such as refrigerators and juice machines located on patient units. Stores and rotates stock items. Assures all food/supplies are covered, labeled, and dated. Identifies errors in diet information transmitted from inpatient units to Nutrition and Food Services and takes any necessary corrective actions. Runs nourishment labels, reports, prints back-up copies of reports and labels for contingency plans. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 6:00am -2:30pm; 10:00am - 6:30pm; 9:00am - 5:30pm - rotating weekends and holidays, subject to change depending on the needs of the agency. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Health Technician (Dietetics). Qualifying specialized experience includes: Experience where you applied knowledge of quantity food service operations, proper nutrition, food items and appropriate quantities; working with clients, patients, and/or, customers to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; use computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work. OR EDUCATION: Successful completion of a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to this position (i.e. nutrition, dietary therapy, food and nutrition science, food service systems management, etc.). This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR COMBINATION: Equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as listed above. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of the position (i.e. nutrition, dietary therapy, food and nutrition science, food service systems management, etc.). This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Computer SkillsCustomer Service (Clerical/Technical)Food Service To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-05. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Demands: The work requires walking, standing, bending, lifting and carrying of light items, such as food trays, instruction materials, books, and manuals. Requires long periods of sitting and moving about in an office environment, including repetitive motion activities of the hands and fingers for extensive keyboard and computer mouse use, and office tasks such as answering and holding a telephone phone, and writing. The work may require walking indoors, outdoors or to and from other areas of the medical center. It may be necessary to lift and/or push equipment. Incumbent is subject to periods continuous standing, sitting, walking and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Work Environment: Work is performed in a hospital and involves some exposure to contagious diseases. The employee must observe ergonomics pertaining to working in an office setting with electrical and stationary equipment. Employee must be alert to wet floors, gas, steam, electrical equipment, and general safety precautions including correct lifting techniques in all potential work areas. Discomfort may exist due to changes in temperature and/or humidity. Standard precautions may necessitate the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in situations of potential exposure.
