Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a highly respected team in the Litigation Support Unit (LSU) in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Illinois to provide general office clerical support to professional, program, or technical staff members utilizing a knowledge of office automation hardware and software systems. If selected, you will receive formal and/or on-the-job training as needed. Typical work assignments will include: Providing office clerical support to professional, program, or technical staff members. Sorting, calculating, and retrieving data for standard reports by integrating output from different software types. Cataloging and managing incoming discovery, which includes creating, updating, and maintaining discovery collections logs. Producing a variety of written documents by using varied and advanced functions in several types of office automation software. Developing applications to utilize database or spreadsheet software to store, manipulate, sort and report statistical and other information. Performing office support functions such as organizing and maintaining office files, greeting and directing office visitors, and answering a multi-line telephone and providing factual information to callers. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Qualifications

GS-05: To be eligible at the GS-5 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as drafting a variety of documents utilizing word processing software, creating excel tables, editing electronic documents; organizing and maintaining physical and electronic files; obtaining statistical and other information from files to input into appropriate database or spreadsheet; and performing office support functions by answering phones and greeting visitors for an organization. OR Successfully completed four years of education above the high school level. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. OR Combination of specialized experience and post-high school education which fully meets the qualification requirement of the position (only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience). To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.) Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP)-The CTAP provides eligible surplus and displaced competitive service employees in the Department of Justice with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. If your Department of Justice component has notified you in writing that you are a surplus or displaced employee eligible for CTAP consideration, you may receive selection priority if: 1) this vacancy is within your CTAP eligibility, 2) you apply under the instructions in this announcement, and 3) you are found well-qualified for this vacancy.
