There are two (2) positions located in the Prosthetics & Sensory Aids Service (P&SAS) at VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System - West Los Angeles VA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. The primary purpose of the Electrical Equipment Repairer is to repair and maintain power mobility devices (scooters & power wheelchairs), manual wheelchairs, and other qualified equipment for eligible veterans.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to: Communicating with both patients and staff on all information relative to wheelchair/scooter status or delivery or repair to ensure there is a cooperative and well-planned office approach to patient care Providing a central wheelchair and repair shop for expeditious service to eligible and entitled veterans Creating a significant cost savings in the repair of patient wheelchairs, scooters and rehabilitative medical equipment Establishing work methods and procedures to test, diagnose and repair all electric/electronic components associated with motorized wheelchairs and electric-motorized 3 and 4-wheel carts that are out of factory warranty Repairing and maintaining all components of an electric wheelchair and cart to include the supporting battery charger units Inspecting power/manual wheelchairs and carts, under warranty, for acceptance or return to the vendor or factory for repair or replacement Assembling, energizing, adjusting and testing new power wheelchairs before issuance to severely handicapped patients and accomplishing necessary modifications for hand or chin controls, various supportive or restrictive devices Maintaining, requesting and assigning all tools and equipment used in the wheelchair and warehousing function Ensuring that adequate equipment and tools are on hand to assure the capability to repair all updated components of the power/manual wheelchairs and carts Performing all duties of a Warehouseman in the Wheelchair Repair Section of P&SAS Initiating, developing and assigning storage areas and criteria for proper inventory management Purchasing and maintaining adequate inventory of components on hand to allow repairs to be accomplished without undue delays Serving as the P&SAS subject matter expert on vehicle lifts and assisting the Wheelchair Clinic team and P&SAS staff in determining the most appropriate vehicle lift Making use of other subject matter experts in the community and via the internet for additional guidance, as needed Responsible for procurement of wheelchairs and scooters resulting from prescriptions generated by Sepulveda, Bakersfield and Santa Maria wheelchair clinics Performing other related duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 08:00 a.m. to 04:30 p.m. Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized

Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The incumbent is required to do a great deal of stooping and bending from the wheelchair position or stooping and bending while inspecting and repairing wheelchair/scooter. He/she will retrieve parts from shelves up to seven feet off the floor. Safety wheelchair mobility guidelines are always used when working on the chair. He/She will carry and move heavy items of supplies from storage to work areas. These loads may exceed twenty pounds in weight but should not have exceeded forty pounds without assistive devices. Equipment may have to be delivered to the medical wards, which will require a great deal of walking or mobility. Care is exercised to avoid minor injuries such as cuts scrapes and bruises and all lifting is done in a proper manner to avoid strains or sprains, etc. WORK CONDITIONS: The wheelchair repair work is done inside a well-lighted and well-ventilated area. This work is normally dirty and greasy. The work is exposed to the possibility of electrical shock, burns, abrasions and cuts, with the risk of infection while working on contaminated wheelchairs. Warehousing functions will be performed both inside and outside as the occasion demands, but mostly inside. May be exposed to some weather conditions while/when some items are picked up and delivered to the supply receiving loading dock. Work is such that contact with patients may occur where exposure to certain illnesses may require precautions. Good universal precautions to be practiced at all items while handing reclaimed equipment and working in patient service areas. The assignment may include weekends, holiday tour changes and temporary assignments to the West Los Angeles Wheelchair Repair Shop to incorporate and meet the needs of our customer population. Incumbent will be required to travel to other Network 22 Wheelchair Repair shops, local and national conferences to acquire additional knowledge and keep up-to-date on the latest technology and equipment. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
