Duties
Provides specific directions to customers on filing and eligibility requirements for various land and mineral uses. Applies substantial knowledge and background on the mission of BLM to research and respond to a variety of complex inquiries
Provides information regarding wild horse and burro adoptions, map purchases, area archeology and area history. Provides information to members of the public on types of recreational opportunities available on BLM and other agency.
Explains rules related to the use of recreational areas and facilities and informs and persuades contacts to obtain greater public cooperation in protecting resources.
Stays well informed of all changes in laws and regulations affecting public lands and explains these changes to members of the public.
Sells documents, maps, books, copies of records, National Park Passes and other similar materials. Is designated as cashier/collections officer.
Reviews initial documents being filed for adherence to the filing requirements, examines the appropriate land status records to determine allowable uses, and assists with processing of payment and filing of legal documents.
Prepares letters, memos, and reports and makes entries into automated systems from handwritten notes.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship is required.

Qualifications

At the GS-05 Level:
Specialized Experience: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04) in the federal service. Specialized experience is further defined as experience in accomplishing routine support tasks in a busy office environment; providing information to the public and internal customers by phone, email, and in person; preparing written correspondence using automated systems; and maintaining files and related materials.

Education: Completed 4 years of education above high school in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the prerequisite.
-OR-
Combination of Education and Specialized Experience: Have and equivalent combination of the experience and education described above. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of study is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year, is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
At the GS-06 Level:
Specialized Experience: One (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) in the Federal service. Specialized experience is further defined as experience that includes answering internal and external inquiries with detailed information; preparing written correspondence with complex subject matter; provide assistance to employees and the general public; conduct research to respond to inquiries such as laws, regulations, and organizational policies; and maintaining records and files.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.
Physical Demands: The work involves sitting and standing, typically in a public room environment. Moderate lifting of plats and public information documents may be required.
Work Environment: Work is performed in an office building that requires normal safety precautions.
Education
This position falls under the Contact Representative Series 0962, Clerical and Administrative Support Positions. There are no Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for this job series.
For the GS-05 grade level only: education may be substituted for specialized experience (see qualification section for education requirements). If using education to qualify -

There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-06 grade level.
