The purpose of the position is to perform a wide variety of complex biological science technical support functions. Assignments require that the incumbent have greater knowledge, experience, and judgment in order to complete a variety of conventional projects.

Duties
The major duties of the Biological Science Technician position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assist professional staff in planning field research and resource monitoring programs for evaluating rare, threatened and endangered plant species, vegetation communities, population dynamic, ecosystem relationships and public health/safety issues.
Schedule, coordinate, and carry out a wide variety of field activities in support of such programs as the control of non-native and invasive plant species and enhancement of native plant populations.
Such activities may include inventory and assessment, habitat restoration and threat mitigations, and applications of herbicides.
Make field observation of plant conditions, evaluates conditions/problems and provides summary reports and recommendations to professional staff for use in planning protection and mitigation activities.
This includes risk assessment of trees to determine the presence of defects.
Develop and use databases to enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis of collected field data and use standard statistical methods in the preparation of reports; enter and retrieve data from a geographic information system (GIS) and other information management systems: use a variety of computer software programs to analyze data, develop graphs, charts, illustrations, reports, and technical publications.
Provide work direction and guidance to lower graded technicians, volunteers, and/or Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) enrollees in gathering field data, including proper and safe handling of equipment and tools, and operation of motorized vehicles.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/25/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for the POSITIONTITLE position at the GS-07 grade, you must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-6. Specialized experience is experience that equips the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Examples of qualifying specialized experience includes: Work performed in a controlled environment, research activity or control program work, nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment, work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice. Performs functions related to resource management projects associated with a variety, or any one of the following emphasis areas such as plants or forests, wildlife, fisheries, water resources, and/or habitat management. -OR-
EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate level education related to the position. You must include transcripts. -OR-
Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include your resume with hours worked per week annotated, as well as transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week.
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using
education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
