This Position is located at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center, Iron Mountain, MI. and is organizationally aligned under the Engineering Service line. the Primary purpose for the position is to perform pipefitter and plumber duties.

Duties

This Pipefitter position is located at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain, MI. Major Duties: Installing, modifying and repairing new and existing steam piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, heat exchangers, pressure relief valves, pumping traps , flash and expansion tanks, condensate, circulating pumps and radiators. Works form building plans, blueprints, specifications, plumbing codes, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion, and operation of various water and drain piping systems and equipment. Installs equipment by planning and completing the routing and placement of Steam, water and drain systems leading to the equipment, determining and placing the equipment at the proper levels and points in the systems and joining, sealing, and testing systems and equipment for proper pressures, leak free joints, and operations. Installs, maintains and repairs internal water lines, internal and external soil pipe, medical air, vacuum, external water mains, and all related devices and equipment such as drain traps, faucets, lavatories, water closets, showers, tubs, grease traps, circulations pumps, fire control sprinkler systems, hydrotherapy units, urinals, surgical scrub sinks, x-ray developers, laundry machines, drinking fountains, air compressors, dietetic equipment, dental equipment, and various valves, pump, etc. Welds, solders and brazes joints and fittings using as or electric welding units as well as silver solder, solders, brazes, threads, and glues piping systems and performs leak tests. Responsible for full implementation and continuous update of the Engineering Service AEMS/MERS systems that apply to the Plumbing Shop. Understanding the operation of computers, printers, and various types of windows based software packages. Responsible for the total operation, repair, maintenance, and documentation of the reverse osmosis system in the medical center. Responsible for facility water safety devices; mixing valves, back flow preventers, check valves, temperature regulating devices. Work Schedule: Full time, Primary shift is Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm, other shifts may be required on a temporary basis. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent makes repairs from ladders, scaffolding and platforms to reach equipment in out of the way places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable position. Occasionally lifts and carries items over 50 pounds. Work is inside and outside in hot, humid, or cold environments. It is usually dusty, dirty, and greasy. Bad smelling fumes are sometimes present. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of sometimes severe strains, cuts, burns, noise, eye damage, bruises, and infections and is, therefore, required to use appropriate procedures and equipment available for the personal protection. The incumbent may be required to work with asbestos contaminated materials and will, therefore, be required to use protective clothing and equipment to eliminate possible asbestos exposure. Incumbent is furnished safety shoes, eye protection and other personal protective equipment necessary to the trade. It is the responsibility of the incumbent to use personal protective equipment appropriately during the course of the work.
