The Grounds and Transportation Unit Supervisor directs various programs including but not limited to the horticulture program, fleet transportation program, vehicle and equipment maintenance program, and hazardous chemicals program.
Duties
Major duties include:
Provides administrative, fiscal, technical, and professional services.
Directs various service line programs.
Directs administrative and operational services.
Provides corrective action for problems involving horticulture management, insect and disease control.
Determines corrective action to improve vigor, health and appearance of both exterior and interior flora and fauna.
Maintains records on work performed, staff assignments, timekeeping, appraisals and evaluations, performance counseling, mission accomplishment.
Maintains information on fertilizer and pesticide usage schedules with pertinent information recorded about the material applied, application rate, etc. Prepares purchase order requests for supplies and equipment.
Supervises grounds and transportation, scheduling and assigning specific day-to-day grounds maintenance tasks.
Responsible for the procurement, management, maintenance, scheduling, assignment of fleet vehicles and operations of grounds equipment and vehicles on station.
Maintain fleet information on the Comprehensive Automobile Reporting System (CARS) database.
Responsible for preventive and operational maintenance, calibration and utilization of tools, machines, pieces of equipment, and various types of nonstandard vehicles.
Directs management and supervision of training, education and certification schedules; equipment and tool calibration; route and shift schedules; chemical analysis and hazardous chemicals.
Possesses knowledge of budgets, budgeting, budget execution, and fiscal accountability.
Possess Contracting Officer Representative training and is expected to maintain this certification.
Experience in heavy equipment operation and maintenance including but not limited to excavators, hoes, tractors, busses, loaders, plows, commercial mowers, bailers, street sweepers, and dumps.
Supervise and be experienced with the use of soil amendments to improve soil quality for the culture of specific plants.
Supervises the pruning to remove dead, dying, diseased wood from shrubbery and trees and prepares purchase order requests for vendor services when the work cannot be performed by station employees.
Directs the use of and uses chemical controls when necessary for diseases, insects and weed control.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work will be performed over 250 acres and, as such, requires frequent walking and the use of a tractor for transportation of equipment and materials. Frequent bending, stooping and standing are required due to the nature of the work. The The Grounds
and Transportation Unit Supervisor will climb ladders to prune, plant material or perform tasks such as placing Christmas lights. Incumbent will be required to lift heavy objects such as fertilizer, salt, plant material and maneuver loaded wheelbarrows. The majority of work is done outdoors. The The Grounds and Transportation Unit Supervisor will be subject to discomfort from long periods of heat and humidity, cold, wind, rain and snow, and will perform responsibilities with minimum interruption under these conditions. Incumbent will be exposed to chemical sprays and dusts. Employee
will be provided protective clothing and equipment such as gloves, respirator, safety shoes and boots. During periods of extreme weather, such as heavy rain or severe cold, the incumbent may be given assignments to assist other members of the section in moving materials
and equipment, shop maintenance and other tasks which may be outside the range of gardening.
