About the Position: The primary purpose of this position is to provide a wide range of support to military optometrists who perform eye care for all eligible military beneficiaries IAW governing Air Force (AF), Defense Health Agency (DHA), and Department of Defense (DoD) instructions.
Duties
Performs advanced ophthalmic clinic duties.
Responsible for the administration of special programs
Reviews medical records for previous visual acuity assessments and updates patient’s visual status.
Supports care provided by optometrist in determining refractive error and diagnosing and treating ocular diseases, disorders, and injuries in an outpatient clinic setting.
Organizes, prepares, and reestablishes patient treatment rooms between patients and maintains ophthalmic medications in a ready state in multiple treatment areas.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Personnel security investigation required.
- Childcare Criminal History background checks required prior to movement to position.
- This is a drug testing designated position and is subject to random testing for drug use.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
- Must possess and maintain current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Must have vision in both eyes corrected to at least 20/30 in each eye and must not have a detectable central scotoma in either eye.
- The employee will comply with locally directed Military Treatment Facility commander training consistent with standards and directives applicable to Active Duty and contractor personnel performing similar occupational series duties.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience operating optometry equipment, screening optometry patients for common ophthalmic emergencies, measuring patient visual acuity, and conducting various vision tests, such as color and depth perception tests. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05).
