You will serve as a SHEET METAL MECHANIC in the PRODUCTION DIVISION, Facilities Management & Sustainment Product Line of NAVFAC ENGINEERING CMD MID-ATLANTIC.

Duties

You will assemble sheet metal structures using assembly joints, hems, and edges. You will receive assignments and instructions orally, through work orders, or by sketches that relay specific information on the sheet metal work to be done. You will use basic hand tools (e.g., drills, hammers, chisels) to cut, bend, shape, and form sheet metal. You will use tools and equipment of the locksmith trade to install locks throughout an organization. You will perform visual checks to detect worn or damaged parts (e.g., broken springs, jammed pins, bent discs, broken tail pieces, rust, corrosion). You will perform operational tests to determine the extent and location of malfunctions. you will occasionally be required to inspect locks and locking devices to determine if they have been tampered with or neutralized.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may be considered ESSENTIAL, and the incumbent will be required to report for duty or held in a duty status to provide support before, during, and/or after special emergency situation, or periods of increased security threat.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including working in shifts, regular overtime and overtime on an emergency call-back-basis.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Fabricating, assembling, repairing, and installing sheet metal items having combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves and planes; 2) Reading and interpreting blueprints, technical manuals, and schematics; and 3) Using a wide variety of hand and power tools associated with sheet metal.4) Performing a full repair cycle of locating malfunction, disassembly, repair, cleaning, reassembly, and re-installation of a wide variety of commercially manufactured locking devices; 5) Determining the work sequence and selecting hand and power tools (e.g. files, picks, tweezers, tension wrenches, grinders, buffers, stamping machines, electric drills, soldering, irons, brazing torches, bench lathes and drill presses) to repair locking mechanisms; and 6) Planning techniques to be used and apply judgement in the selection of tools and accepted trade practices to troubleshoot and neutralize locks according to appropriate guidelines, manufacturer drawings, diagrams, and technical manuals Applicants must meet the requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualification Handbook for Trades and Labor Occupations.
