This position serves as a meteorologist within one of the multiple National Airway Systems Engineering (NASE) sub-teams providing advanced meteorological expertise in support of the systems engineering function of or more NAS systems. Performs multiple, varying and complex assignments under the minimal direction of a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced technical specialist.

Duties

Provides guidance on, and resolution of complex problems related to the introduction of new systems into the NAS and problems associated with continued operations of commissioned facilities, to include technical documentation. Develop, tests, and validates new and modified algorithms. Plans and executes parameterization studies of algorithms and optimizes performance. Analyzes equipment, software, and system performance: develops, issues, and refines operating criteria. Identifies trends, determines system impact or deficiencies. Develops plans, standards, procedures, quality control techniques, instruction and system modifications and modernization which will improve the reliability, maintainability, safety, and continuity of meteorological services of NAS facilities and equipment.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: A. Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included: 1. At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of:a. Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;*b. Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale);c. Three semester hours of physical meteorology; andd. Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation.2. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.* 3. Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.* 4. At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science.* There is a prerequisite or corequisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major.ORB. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.ANDTo qualify for this position at the FV-J (FG/GS-14) level, in addition to the Basic Requirements you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-I (FG/GS-13) level. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.Specialized Experience: includes experience developing, testing and validating new and modified algorithms; analyzes, designs, and implements system-wide software/firmware modifications; provide technical guidance on projects or other team members; identify trends, determine system impact or deficiencies; experience applying knowledge of NAS meteorological systems which produce wind shear alerts and receive weather data from three or more NAS systems; experience applying wind shear integration logic to determine appropriate unification of independently generated alerts for dissemination by Air Traffic Controllers to pilots.ANDQuality Ranking Factor (QFR): Well-qualified applicants will demonstrate experience with one or more NAS meteorological systems (i.e. TDWR, ASOS, AWOS, WSP, LLWAS, NXRAD, JAWS, SAWS, ITWS) within their resume.Applicants should include examples of specialized experience in their work history. Qualifications must be met by the closing date of the announcement.
