Duties

Student volunteers are not considered to be federal employees for any purpose other than for purposes of section 7905 (relating to commuting by means other than single-occupancy motor vehicles), chapter 81 (relating to compensation for injury) and sections 2671 through 2680 of title 28 (relating to tort claims). As such, they are not eligible for any other employee benefit (e.g., leave, overtime, health benefits, life insurance, retirement, thrift savings plan). This internship is NOT telework eligible and volunteers will be expected to report in person for duty. The Student Volunteer program for the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Nevada allows students to explore Federal career options as well as develop personal and professional skills. Students will be exposed to the Federal work environment and will learn about the missions and responsibilities of various Federal agencies and departments. Students must be enrolled, at least half-time, in an accredited high school, college, trade school, or other qualifying educational institution. Students may or may not be assigned duties which directly relate to their course of study and are not considered Federal employees. However, time spend as a Student Volunteer is documented and can be used for school credit at the discretion of their educational institution. Student Volunteers perform service without compensation. Student Volunteers will provide general office support to one or more professional, program, or technical staff members in the United States Attorney's Office for the Las Vegas Office. You will receive formal and/or on-the-job training as needed. Duties include: Answering telephones and referring callers to staff members or taking messages as appropriate; Operating a copy machine; Sorting and arranging material for filing in alphabetical, numerical, or chronological order; Locating and retrieving materials; Stocking forms and other office supplies; and Making recurring and special messenger trips as necessary. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

To be eligible for this internship ALL of the following requirements must be met: Student Status: Definition of a student - applicant must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, two-year or four-year college or university, graduate/professional school, or certificate program equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study (go to http://www.ed.gov/accreditation to verify accreditation status) pursuant to 5 CFR 362. You must be considered in good academic standings by the school. Individuals must be taking at least a half-time academic, vocational, or technical course load leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate. "Half-time" is defined by the school in which the student is enrolled. Grade Point Average: You must have at least a 2.5 GPA. Citizenship: Student Interns must be United States citizens or owe permanent allegiance to the United States. (Currently, natives of American Samoa, Swains Island and certain inhabitants of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are the only groups that owe permanent allegiance to the United States.)Background Investigation: You must successfully complete a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment. Student Volunteer Agreement: All interns are required to sign the Participant Agreement. Qualification requirements as outlined below. Students are encouraged to apply. Strong academic background, excellent research and writing skills, an eye for detail, and a commitment to fairness and integrity supporting the administration of justice. Applicant must be a U. S. citizen and willing to commit to at least 6 months of service, generally working 16 hours per week. Applicants are subject to a background investigation due to the sensitive nature of the work performed by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Education

All academic degrees and coursework must be completed at an institution that has obtained accreditation or pre-accreditation status from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications.
