The mission of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) is to research, investigate, recover and identify remains of DoD personnel unaccounted for from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, the Iraq conflicts and the Persian Gulf War, and to disseminate appropriate information on the status of missing persons from past conflicts to authorized family members. The DPAA Director, (SES-III) reports to the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy (USD(P).

Duties

This is a Direct Hire Public Notice, under this recruitment, applications will be accepted for each location and/or installation identified in this Public Notice and selections are made for vacancies as they occur. Incumbents typical work assignments may include the following: Performs independent analyses on dental remains of missing DoD personnel designated conflicts after cessation of activities to provide a dental identification of the remains. Applies professional and technical knowledge of general and restorative dentistry, including dental charting, digital photography, digital radiography, evaluation and interpretation of dental radiographic images, and microscopy when performing analytical casework on postmortem dental remains. Prepares professional scientific reports for individual identifications and exclusions. Ensures all forensic casework and research are conducted safely, IAW the laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Maintains physical security of the Scientific Analysis (SA) Directorate and protects the evidence and associated records from loss, cross-transfer and contamination. Serves as SA's Radiation Protection Officer and the Hazard Communications Officer.

Examples of dentistry experience may include the removal of decay; filling cavities; straightening, extracting, and repairing teeth; treating gum diseases; performing corrective surgery; making measurements/models for dentures to replace missing teeth, administering anesthetics, writing prescriptions; and performing other requirements of the position. In addition to the BASIC REQUIREMENT listed above, you must also meet the specialized experience requirement listed below. You may qualify at the GS-14 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrates your experience in: (1) Applying knowledge of dental charting, digital photography, digital radiography, evaluation and interpretation of dental radiographic images, and microscopy to analyze postmortem dental remains; AND (2) Applying forensic odontology techniques and methods to render scientifically valid opinions of identity based on the analysis and review of postmortem and antemortem dental data. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
