The Orlando VA Medical Center is recruiting for a Chief Nurse (Acute Care) who provides executive leadership and direct supervision The Nurse IV is responsible for administrative functions of their assigned nursing units/programs. Functions as an administrator, educator, and consultant utilizing management theory in collaboration with Patient Care Service and other services.

The Acute Care Chief Nurse is accountable to the Deputy Associate Director Patient Care Services and ultimately to the Associate Director for Patient Care Services.
The Chief Nurse for Acute Care provides clinical and administrative leadership and oversight for both clinical nursing practice and administration; establishes/promotes optimal standards in care delivery and develops policies/procedures which incorporate current evidence-based practice; works with his/her peers to formulate strategic directions for the Nursing Service; plans, implements, and lead activities to enhance customer service; and collaborates with other health care disciplines to establish and sustain programs that cross service and/or discipline lines and influence organizational mission and overall health care delivery.
The Acute Care Chief Nurse for has responsibility and accountability for all nursing care activities in the 2 Medical Inpatient Units, 1 Surgical Unit and 1 Intensive Care Units, Stepdown, Telemetry and Emergency Department. The Chief Nurse (Acute Care) will serve as the direct supervisor of Nurse Managers/Assistant Nurse Managers, second line supervisor for approximately 279 staff nurses, nursing assistants and technicians and professional oversight for advanced practice nurses assigned to acute care.
The CN for Acute Care collaborates with appropriate Service Chiefs to design and implement programs and processes that will enhance quality indicators reported to the VA IPEC (Inpatient Evaluation Center). Examples include establishing Rapid Response Teams, creating preventative measures to enhance Glycemic Control, reducing Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections, Ventilator Associated Pneumonia, ICU Delirium and Acute Myocardial Infarction. The CN is responsible and accountable for assessing and recommending the allocation of resources, both human and material, necessary to ensure positive outcomes for hospitalized patients. This CN will serve as a recognized leader in Acute Care delivery, establishing protocols for the management of patients with ST Elevated Ml (STEMI), Stroke and Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP). The Chief Nurse Acute Care incorporates performance improvement and staffing effectiveness data to design effective, efficient care delivery models, manage assigned budgets, and establish staffing levels to optimally meet the needs of each Veteran patient.
The duties and responsibilities for the Chief Nurse Acute Care include but not limited to:
Responsible for operational planning and expansion of services for the Orlando VA Medical Center.
Serves an integral role on the Nursing Executive Management Team.
Provides clinical and administrative leadership and oversight for both clinical nursing practice and administration.
Establishes/promotes optimal standards in care delivery and develops policies/procedures which incorporate current evidence-based practice
Works with his/her peers to formulate strategic directions for the Nursing Service; plans, implements, and lead activities to enhance customer service.
Collaborates with other health care disciplines to establish and sustain programs that cross service and/or discipline lines and influence organizational mission and overall health care delivery.
Work Schedule: Full-time, work days/hours will be Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with work day/hours flexibility required as administrative and/or clinical demands require.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience:
Master's Degree in Nursing or a related field required, with national certification in Advanced Nursing Administration strongly preferred.
Minimum of five (5) years of full-time professional nursing administrative practice in acute care setting including experience in managing Emergency room, ICU and acute care units. including previous supervisory positions in progressively more responsible leadership assignments required.
Recent experience in managing/overseeing long term care operations and program development and management at the Chief Nurse level or equivalent strongly preferred.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as both a team member and leader, with excellent interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, and exceptional oral and written communication skills, as demonstrated in previous assignments.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse IV - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 4-5 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and appropriate basic or advanced certification desired, and approximately 3-4 years of nursing practice/experience.
Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, kneeling, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, and able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
