This position is located within the Maintenance and Operations Section of the Facility Management Service at the VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC. The work of this Industrial Equipment Mechanic position involves the installation, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of hospital personal property equipment (i.e.; generators, kitchen, grounds care equipment, floor buffers, beds, etc.).
Duties
Major duties include but are not limited to:
Makes major repairs to mechanical equipment, execution of the Medical Center's Preventative Maintenance Program for assigned equipment and modification, design and construction of any replacement parts and minor roof repair and maintenance;
Troubleshoots, repairs and performs preventative maintenance of mechanical beds and stretchers;
Troubleshoots, repairs and performs preventative maintenance of grounds equipment (push mowers, riding lawnmowers, tractors and trailer equipment and hand-held power equipment;
Fabricates, repairs and performs preventative maintenance of non-medical personal property purchased by the Medical Center;
Troubleshoots, repairs and performs preventative maintenance of kitchen equipment;
Troubleshoots, repairs and performs preventative maintenance of Medical Centers four emergency generators (includes test runs of emergency generators, weekly and annual maintenance and oil and filter changes).
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Frequently handles objects weighing 45 pounds and occasionally carries objects weighing 45 pounds and over for considerable distances. Pushes, pulls, reaches, walks, stands, crawls, kneels, bends and works in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time.
Usually performs work inside areas that are adequately lighted, ventilated and heated. Floor and deck surfaces are sometimes uneven, oily and slippery. Frequent exposure to moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises, and to noise and vibration from machines. Occasionally climbs and works from ladders and stagings, possibility of serious injury from slipping and falling. Dirt, grease and dampness are frequently encountered. Various protective devices such as hard hats, gloves, safety shoes and glasses are used.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
