This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, United States Coast Guard, Director of Operational Logistics, Base Portsmouth, Naval Engineering Unit Department, Industrial Production Facility, in Portsmouth, VA. 

Duties

This position operates in support of the US Coast Guard, Naval Engineering Support Unit, Industrial Operations Division and assists in performing major overhaul and/or repairs on machinery and mechanical equipment aboard Coast Guard vessels and stations or used in support of Coast Guard missions.Being a CG civilian makes you a valuable member of the CG team. Typical work assignments include:

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Applicant is required to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • The position requires a valid state driver's license.
  • This position requires a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI).
  • May serve as Emergency Response Team/travel required TAD to disasters.
  • This position may be subject to required overtime.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.

Qualifications

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired.Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: Ability to Perform the Work of the Position without more than normal supervision (Screen Out Element) - Must have and maintain a knowledge of hydraulic theory and equipment, diesel engine troubleshooting and overhaul methods and applications to perform shipboard machinery/system and component tests. Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, Etc Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic) Knowledge to Interpret Instructions, Specification, Etc (Includes Blueprinting Reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Materials Trouble Shooting National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
