This position is located within the Maintenance and Operations Division, Facility Management Service at the Salem VA Medical Center in Salem, VA.
Duties
The major duties include but are not limited to:
Performs recurring maintenance, preventative maintenance and overhaul and repair tasks on standard type of mechanical locking devices;
Opens locks when keys are missing, bypasses or neutralizes security devices designed to prevent such opening without causing damage to such devices;
Installs locking mechanisms and hardware on doors, windows, office and ward equipment, furniture, safes, etc., and recombinates or rekeys locking devices;
Modifies and reworks locking devices to create the special needs of security;
Fabricates keys from patterns or by code equipment;
Installs and maintains electronic locking systems, like digitally encoded key systems such as the Marlok brand security system;
Uses software packages to various lock systems;
Coordinates tasks with other trades such as machinists to fabricate obsolete or hard to find parts;
Works closely with the police department to closely examine locking devices suspected of break-ins or attempted break-ins;
Performs carpentry duties which consist of tearing down and erecting wooden and metal stud blue board partitions and laying or patching various floor coverings; constructs platforms and walkways; installs handrails and other supports; installs and repairs various types of roofing: shingle, metal, bult-up roof; fits lumber together with nails, screws, or glue, in fabricating various wooden items;
Performs masonry duties which consist of tearing down brick and block partitions; lays or patches various types of ceramic tile, repair and lay masonry and concrete floors and sidewalks; tucks point stone and brick work; and,
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:45 am to 4:30 pm.

Qualifications
Physical Effort and Work Conditions: The work of the position requires continued standing, walking, pushing, climbing and bending. The work requires heavy lifting up to 100 pounds but on occasion, the lifting could take place in elevated positions, on ladders and lifts.
Work is both in and outdoors and is subject to varying extremes of weather. Subject to dusty atmospheres, cuts and bruises while handling materials and tools and to communicable diseases while working on wards.
