About the Position: Serves as a historian in the Force Structure and Organizational History Division. Works under the general supervision of the Chief, Force Structure and Organizational History Division, who assigns, suggests and/or approves the scope and objectives of study and work assignments. As necessary or required, works under the supervision of a team leader for specific projects.
Duties
Act as CMH subject matter expert for one or more of the Army's branches or functional areas.
Research and determines the official lineage and honors of Army units.
Confer with and provides assistance to field commanders, major Army commands, Army Staff, and others concerning the impact throughout the Army of proposed force structure changes on unit designations, lineage, and honors.
Apply historical knowledge and expertise to provide advice and technical guidance to HQDA, ACOMs, ASCCs, and others regarding preserving the lineage and honors of historic units.
Maintain the organizational history of Army units in assigned areas.
Plan, research, and prepare special studies or projects in areas of expertise as requested by Army Staff, Chief of Military History, or other agencies and organizations both within and outside DoD.

Basic Requirement for Historian:
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting research in primary and secondary sources to determine the lineage and honors of military units; conducting comprehensive studies of organizational development within subcomponents of military force structure; researching special studies concerning the history of military units and their organization; providing assistance to field commanders and major military commands concerning the impact of proposed force structure changes on military unit designations, lineage, and honors; and maintaining historical records and military unit documentation. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
Education
