You will serve as an AUDIOLOGIST in the U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine & Surgery (BUMED) and Department of Navy of NMRTU MCRD SAN DIEGO CA. This announcement uses the Expansion of Direct Hire Authority Personnel of the Department of Defense to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

Duties

You will investigate and apply new approaches and advanced methods in evaluation, treatment, management, rehabilitation, and resolution of patient caseload assignments. You will evaluate, manage, disposition and counsel an expansive range of complex and difficult patients populations including those involving auditory dysfunction associated with traumatic brain injury, polytrauma or post-traumatic stress disorders. You will conduct comprehensive diagnostic audiological assessments and procedures, and makes critical patient medical qualification and disposition determinations. You will manage and oversee the Hearing Conservation Program. You will monitor data for trends that impact program implementation and outcomes, and proactively communicate findings, along with improvement opportunities, to noise hazard command leadership. You will education physicians, Audiology residents/students, nurses, medical professionals and paraprofessionals on theoretical and practical aspects of audiology, and hearing conservation practices and procedures. You will maintain current knowledge on the latest devices through collaboration with industry leaders, product manufacturers, and market vendors, and through proactive investigation of new products.

  • In accordance with BUMEDINST 6010.30 Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) - or - Board Certification from the American Board of Audiology (ABA).
  • In accordance with BUMEDINST 1500.15F, employees assigned to or subject to being assigned to duties providing direct patient care, either diagnostic or therapeutic must possess and maintain the Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • A favorable Tier 3 background investigation is required for all Non-Critical Sensitive (NCS) positions with access to network systems and Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • A full, current, and unrestricted license to practice Audiology as applicable in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Maintains current qualifications and credentials as a certified Occupational Hearing Conservation Course Director through the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC).
  • In accordance with BUMEDINST 6010.30 Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) - or - Board Certification from the American Board of Audiology (ABA).
  • In accordance with BUMEDINST 1500.15F, employees assigned to or subject to being assigned to duties providing direct patient care, either diagnostic or therapeutic must possess and maintain the Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • The incumbent may be required to work on any day or shift, including night, weekends, holidays, or on an “on call” basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license to drive to and from different supported commands in order to complete work site visits and clinic visits.

Qualifications

ALL Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Education: The mandatory education program described below must have been approved, recognized, or accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (external link) (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (external link) (ASHA) at the time the degree was obtained. (You must provide copy of transcripts. Failure to possess this factor WILL result in an ineligible rating.) Degree: A graduate or higher level graduate degree that included 18 semester hours in the field of audiology with approved clinical practice that was approved, recognized, or accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) at the time my degree was obtained. Applicants for positions with both speech pathologist and audiologist duties must have successfully completed all the requirements for a graduate or higher level degree with 18 semester hours in one of the fields with approved clinical practice and, in addition, must have either completed a minor in the other field or must have had at least 1 year of professional experience in the other field. (You must provide copy of transcripts. Failure to possess this factor WILL result in an ineligible rating.) Licensure Must poses a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice Speech/Language Pathology and/or Audiology in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. (You must attach a copy of the licensure/certification or other required documentation to support your answer). In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements for this position Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Utilizing principles, practices, procedures and theories in the field of Audiology as they relate to prevention, mitigation and management of hearing disorders; Assessing, diagnosing and treating acute/complex auditory disorders - determining differential diagnosis of cochlear, retro-cochlear, organic, and non-organic hearing disorders - coordinating tertiary care in the comprehensive evaluation of complex patients; Determining work-relatedness of hearing loss and objective evaluation/investigation of employee Reasonable Work Accommodation practicalities and potentials; Assessing employee medical qualifications and active duty medical readiness as it pertains to the auditory system, and determining appropriate patient disposition through in-depth, comprehensive review of noise exposures, medical history and assessment, and safety concerns; AND Managing and overseeing Occupational Audiology processes, supervising technician staff, and implementing/managing Hearing Conservation Programs.
