About the Position: Serve as an Animal Health Technician at a Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF) located on Joint Base Lewis McChord, WA. This position may be filled as a term appointment NTE 4 Years. Term appointments may be extended up to a maximum of six years. With DoD approval, term appointments may be extended beyond 6 six years, but not more than 8 years.

Duties

Work independently and is responsible for making decisions on behalf of the clinic. Determine vital signs (heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, hydration status, attitude,) of animals presented for routine sick call or medical evaluation clinics. Conduct preliminary observation and cursory physical examination. Distinguish normal from abnormal anatomical and physiological findings such as pathological heart and respiratory sounds, abnormal abdominal palpation findings, ataxic gait, and abnormal behavior. Replace and maintain correct position of bandages, splints, casts, and other devices designed to prevent further damage to an injured extremity. Place intravenous (IV) catheter and initiate fluid therapy. Operate fluid pump for accurate intravenous delivery of drugs based upon calculation of drug concentration, body weight, and desired fluid delivery rate. Perform Radiology, endoscopic, and surgical support work. Set up, tears down, operates, and troubleshoots endoscopic equipment. Provide full cleaning and chemical sterilization and routine end-user maintenance of endoscopic (flexible, rigid) equipment. Administers IV anesthetic induction agents under supervision. Intubates trachea and initiates gas anesthetic administration. Operate and perform operator level maintenance on gas anesthesia machine.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is designated as moderate risk involving Public Trust. Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation including a credit check to determine suitability for Federal employment and/or the position.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This is a Term position scheduled to last 4 years. A term position may be extended to a maximum of six years depending upon the needs of management.
  • Term employment is subject to a one-year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position requires the employee to wear a uniform, scrubs, or other appropriate medical professional attire while on duty.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination

OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Animal Health and Behavior.(Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Animal HusbandryBiological Laboratory InvestigationBiologyVisual Identification Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
