The position is organizationally known as a Locksmith and reports to the Chief of Police within Police Service within the John D. Dingell Medical Center. The single focus of this position is repair, overhauling, modifying, testing, and installing a variety of locking devices typically found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes, vaults, and other secured locations.

Duties

Primary duties: Installs, modifies, and repairs doors, door hardware, door closers, door hinges, door frames, automatic openers and associated equipment. Maintains and distributes keys and maintains master key log. Follows complex oral and written instructions. Read, comprehend and apply blueprints, schematics and specifications during new construction, modifications, and repairs. Safely uses and maintains many tools, measuring equipment, test devices and instruments of the skilled crafts. Keep tools secure and organized so that they are available for use at all times. Independently diagnose malfunctioning equipment, analyze the situation, determine the type of and extent of repairs needed and proceed with the corrective action to restore the item to use in the least amount of time. Relay and explain deficiencies, modifications and repairs to supervisors and upper management. Work Schedule: Variable shifts and days. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/05/2023. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work assignments require standing, stooping, bending, kneeling for prolonged periods as well as working in cramped and awkward positions.
