This position is located in the Psychology Service within the Mental Health Careline (MHCL). The incumbent will assist with the administration and scoring of a wide range of individually-administered neuropsychological and psychological tests, behavioral rating scales, and other assessment techniques to assure prompt response to evaluative referral requests and to assist in determining neurobehavioral and psychiatric status.

Duties

The incumbent is responsible for the accuracy and validity of all obtained test results and interacts with veterans with a wide variety of medical, neurological, and psychiatric diagnoses. Critical for the delivery of quality consultation and research services and for the determination of diagnostic impressions, treatment recommendations, and treatment interventions for individual patients. Demonstrates proficiency in neuropsychological assessment procedures, including the accurate administration and scoring of cognitive screening tools and standardized tests of intelligence, achievement, attention, memory, speech and language, visuospatial/ constructional skills, and executive functions. Demonstrates the ability to operate equipment, such as computers, tape recorders, and other specialized assessment equipment, as well as sufficient computer sophistication for purposes of data entry, scoring, and analysis. Ensures the cooperation of patients during the assessment procedure, which may include provision of basic supportive counseling. Provides timely and appropriate documentation in accordance with adopted policies of the Psychology Service for purposes of communication of progress in completion of consultation requests and communication of pertinent testing observations in the medical chart. General knowledge of VA, medical center, Service, and professional policies, standards of practice, and codes of conduct/ethical principles that pertain to the practice of psychology and neuropsychology. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/05/2023. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-09 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-07. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. Selective Placement Factor: This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is: The incumbent for this position must demonstrate 1) technical expertise in the administration and scoring of a wide range of individually-administered neuropsychological and psychological tests, behavioral rating scales, and other assessment techniques to assure prompt response to evaluate referral requests and to assist in determining neurobehavioral and psychiatric status and 2) the ability to accurately and effectively perform psychological diagnostic interviewing and basic counseling services. Demonstrates proficiency in neurospsychological assessment procedures including conducting structured interviews and administering standardized tests of intelligence, achievement, attention, memory, speech-language functions, visuospatial/constructional skills, and executive functions, as well as cognitive screening tools. Demonstrates proficiency in the administration and scoring of traditional psychological assessment measures for purposes of assessment of emotional status, personality, vocational, avocational, and/or functional capability including measures such as the MMPI-2, PAI and BDI-2. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Education: This position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in an appropriate social or biological science, which included or was supplemented by 12 semester hours in psychology. AND Specialized Experience: You must have two years of specialized experience. One of those years of experience must be comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level. Specialized experience must have included technical work under the direction of a professional psychologist in a program of professional services, training, or research . OR, Substitute Education for Experience: Two years of graduate study in psychology in an accredited college or university may be substituted for 2 years of experience and meets in full the requirements at the GS-9 level. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary, although the stress involved in continually working with persons in emotional and physical distress and who may be uncooperative, poorly motivated, obstreperous, or possibly assaultive, makes this position appreciably more demanding than most sedentary lines of employment. Manual dexterity, proficient handwriting speed, physical agility, some degree of physical exertion (i.e., moderate lifting of test supplies, records and equipment), walking/mobility, listening, writing, and sitting for prolonged periods of time are required.
