The Wage Grade-2 Laundry Worker position is located at the Canandaigua VAMC: Service Line/ Laundry Service under the direction of Environmental Management Service. The incumbent performs varied combinations of tasks in one or more functional areas of laundry processing such as receiving. sorting and marking soiled linen and apparel; processing flatwork and roughdry items; and assembly and issuing clean laundry.

Duties

General: Performs duties on a scheduled basis as an integral part of a complete laundry service essential to the needs of the patients and employees of the medical centers. Checks in (accepts and count items) patient personal clothing, uniforms, special linens and clothing to assure that the items are correctly counted and marked. Maintains a current patient roster and assists in annual linen inventory. Complies with all fire and safety regulations. Must report unusual circumstances or hazards occurring in work areas to Supervisor. Cleans assigned area and equipment making use of safety equipment provided. Expected to guide volunteers, CWT, and VIP workers. Laundry Processing: Soiled items Sorts soiled linen and checks into types and classes for processing through the washers. Must wear protective gloves and clothing while processing soiled linens. Operates soiled sorting conveyor, cart dumper and cart wash. Operate and correctly records digital scales. Monitor soiled sorting weigh cats. Laundry Processing: flatwork and roughdry items Prepares linen items for processing through the flatwork ironer. Feeds items into flatwork either by utilizing the spreader/ feeder or by hand. Receives linen processed through the flatwork ironer and stack items in specified quantities for shipment. Maintains accurate count of all items processed. Identifies and segregates stained and torn items for further processing or repair. Operates monorail system and garment folding finishing machine. Operates towel folding machine by feeding towels into machine and stacking towels in specified quantities for shipment. Operates bundle tying machine on laundry item in specified quantities for shipment. Fold roughdry linen, counting and stacking items in specified quantities for shipment. Laundry Processing: assembly and distribution of clean items Assemble, prepare and fold clean rough dry line for shipment. Sorts, assembles, and bundles personal clothing and special linen items to assure that all items are accounted for and tagged for delivery. Operates garment-finishing machine by hanging shirts, trousers, and coats on hangers and then the continuous feed line for processing. Hangs on rack after processing is completed. Work Schedule: 7AM-3:30PM, Monday-Friday. Position Description Title/PD#: Laundry Worker, PD # 7795-A Physical Requirements: Laundry workers must stands or walk continuously on concrete floors. While they do not usually have to keep pace with machines, they need a certain amount of quickness in hand and arm movements to meet production standards. They frequently lift or move bundles weighing up to 25 pounds; however in receiving and shipping, occasional lifting of bulk bundles weighing 30 pounds is required. Must be able to adjust work pace to existing workload, which will vary from day to day. Must be able to maintain a good attendance record, possess emotional and mental stability, and work at a steady and efficient pace.
