DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.205) for this occupation.
Duties
This position is located at the VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI and is based in the Rehab Services Division. The primary purpose of this position is to maintain clinic supplies, assemble complex wheelchairs and other durable medical equipment, provide patient care by administering the STRIDE walking program, assist physical and occupational therapists with the provision of patient care, providing customer service by managing the clinic phones, managing schedules and printing schedules for the clinic, maintaining inventory records and contacting patients to issue equipment, and other duties as assigned.
- Maintains and/or assembles supplies for the clinic. Orders new supplies from logistics stock as needed. Manages Personal Protective Equipment ordering.
- Collects patient data, including vital signs, and observation of overall condition.
-Assists the Spinal Cord Injury section with assembling and modifying complex wheelchairs and medical equipment. Mechanical skills are preferred.
- Administers patient care walks for acute care patients on the wards. Enters in computerized documentation after the patient care walks.
-Assists Physical and Occupational Therapists with skilled intervention.
- Maintains, organizes and sanitizes supply and equipment rooms
- Assists with reception, telephone calls, sorting files and data collection
- Performs other related duties as assigned·
-Manages inventory for durable medical equipment to be issued to veterans.
-Manages the glucometer and crash cart checks
-Maintains cleaning and maintenance for clinical equipment.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30p, weekends may be assigned if clinical needs arise.

Physical Requirements: Physical requirements include extensive periods of standing and walking. Patient care activities require regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pushing and similar activities using appropriate body mechanics and other assistive devices for patient and/or equipment movement and transfer. The employee protects self and others from injury.

Specialized Experience - GS-5 LEVEL: Must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-4) in federal service performing work closely related to the work of this job. Specialized experience is experience which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Health Technician. Specialized Experience consists of: Skill in providing direct patient care activities; Ability to observe, perceive, use judgment, show initiative, and pay meticulous attention to detail; Practical knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology; Knowledge and skill in documenting in the computerized medical record, keeping logs related to activities and supplies, and summarizing data.

Education GS-5 Level - Must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree, with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to this position. Combining Experience and Education GS-5 Level - Must have a combination of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the 2nd year) AND specialized experience which meets the total experience requirements for this grade level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-XX.
