This Laundry Machine Worker position is in Environmental Management Service at the VA Bedford Healthcare System, Bedford MA. This position is a full-time at 40 hours per week.

Duties

The Laundry Machine Worker who maintain VA facilities for Veterans and their families are essential to the patient care experience at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). A VA Healthcare career as a Laundry Machine Worker means working alongside other Veterans, contributing to the housekeeping staff and services. Sorts textiles as they are removed from dryers/tumblers; hangs, folds or wraps the articles using personal attention-to-detail. Loads machines to obtain maximum utilization and to prevent over processing of or damage to garments. Assists in maintaining accurate records of all laundry received and processed. Ensures cleanliness of washers, dryers, sinks, laundry products, etc. and keeps lint traps cleaned as often as required. Tests new equipment, products and procedures and evaluates current methods and systems to improve efficiency Operates controls on 100-pound capacity washer/extractor selecting from pre-programmed wash formulas consistent with their various load characteristics. Loads clean linen carts and delivers linen items to areas using established PAR level. Has knowledge to identify small or fragile items for bagging in lieu of marking individually and attaching tag to the bag. Receives linen carts from the soiled linen areas in the facility. Interchange Agreements with Other Merit System: Employees who occupy medical or medical-related positions and were appointed under 38 U.S.C. 4701(1) or (3) [formerly 38 U.S.C. 4104 (1) and (3)] must be serving in a full-time position without time limit and have served continuously for at least one year in this other merit system to be eligible to convert to the Title 5 System. Some exceptions to this rule may apply if you have previously acquired tenure under a Title 5 appointment. Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50, (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held. This position is a National Association of Government Employees (NAGE) Bargaining Unit position.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work requires long periods of standing on hard surfaces and heavy physical effort in removing wet laundry by hand from washers and lifting bundles of dirty laundry from trucks, frequently weighing 35 to 50 pounds or more. Physical effort is required in pushing carts of laundry, sorting, and weighing.
