Duties

As a Legal Administrative Specialist, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing a variety of litigation and trial support services to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) for the Southern District of Illinois. The subject matter will include a broad range of criminal and civil litigation. Legal support services include assistance with case management and case presentations as well as automated case litigation and management programs. Typical work assignments will include the following: Providing litigation support services by preparing, organizing, indexing, developing, and managing discovery, exhibits, evidence, and data, including electronically stored information. Providing technical advice to litigation teams on legal automation options, systems capabilities, and support services available to aid in document review, case preparation, trial preparation, and trial presentation. Preparing computerized trial presentation programs and exhibits. Recommending a variety of software packages that would be most effective for organizing and managing information, documents, and/or the presentation of complex and voluminous evidence. Managing and operating a variety of computer hardware such as printers, audio-visual devices, and other equipment to conceptualize exhibits and complete special presentation projects. Analyze and summarize factual aspects of cases. Preparing a variety of documents, including information requests, pleadings, correspondence, memoranda, and other documentation related to the acquisition of evidence. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Qualifications

TO BE ELIGIBLE AT THE GS-09 LEVEL you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions as defined below: Specialized Experience: At least ONE full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing the following types of duties: working in a legal environment providing technical assistance and a range of case support to attorneys on preparing, organizing, indexing, and managing discovery, exhibits, and other case-related materials; preparing legal documents such as pleadings, subpoenas, motions and proposed orders, discovery correspondence, and trial-related documents; using litigation support technology such as TrialDirector, Relativity, CaseMap, or similar programs to organize case information; reviewing and summarizing documentary and other evidence to facilitate case development; and pre-trial and trial support. OR Education: Possess amaster's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field (e.g. Criminal Justice, Legal Studies) or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or JD., if related. All academic degrees and coursework must be from an accredited or pre-accredited institution. OR Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. To qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year. NOTE: If you are using education to qualify, you MUST provide transcripts to receive consideration.
