This position will serve as a Senior Police Officer at the Mountain Home VA Healthcare System in Johnson City, TN. The Police Officer will perform a full range of police duties by following and executing rules, regulations, or procedures covering law and rules enforcement, physical and personal security operations, patrol duties, control desk duty, coordination with local courts, and/or crime prevention activities for the local jurisdiction.
Duties
Protects the civil rights of all individuals on VA controlled property;
Prevents, detect and investigate crimes;
Patrols assigned areas on foot or by motor vehicle;
Subdues persons causing disturbance or who threaten harm to themselves or others;
Follows rules/procedures concerning search and seizure of evidence and contraband;
Takes charge of significant and catastrophic events;
Conducts investigations, apprehensions, and detention;
Obtains search and arrest warrants;
Arrests violators;
Uses independent judgment in cases where policy is not clear;
Provides basic first aid and CPR prior to arrival of emergency medical personnel;
Prepares report of activities and events that occurred during shift;
Performs traffic control;
Assists citizens in emergency situations; and,
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Work Schedule: Compressed/Flexible Schedule. Candidates must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours and extended hours if determined by the needs of the service. Furthermore, candidates must be willing to be placed, detailed, or temporarily assigned to other related services and/or locations, if necessary.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/21/2023.You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is defined as experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; performing criminal investigative duties; and any other work that provided the require knowledge and skills, and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties as described in this announcement; Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Knowledge to execute the activities and work together with a team to complete an assigned shift. ability to prepare and assist with the preparation of necessary records and reports relating to activities prepared and submitted by team members. Knowledge of and the ability to provide counseling and guidance to team members on various technical, operational, administrative, and personnel matters including new laws, court decisions, police policies, and problems. Knowledge in high visibility, proactive patrolling activities based on criminal trends in order to maintain law and order and the safety and protection of Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, visitors, and others who frequent VA facilities in addition to equipment, buildings, and ground on all property owned and controlled by the VA.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SENIOR POLICE OFFICER POSITION:
Successfully completed the basic police course at the Law Enforcement Training Center.
Possess current, unrestricted LETC credentials.
Pass an annual physical and psychiatric examination in accordance with established medical standards
Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, long hours of standing, walking, driving and similar activities. The incumbent must respond to alarms, pursue suspects, participate in training activities, climb stairs and walk during assigned foot patrols in and around large building, campus, and other physical settings. Agility, dexterity and strength are needed to pursue, apprehend and detain uncooperative suspects. Incumbents must be physically able to lift or carry injured or hurt persons, evacuate persons to safety during storms, disasters, fires or other emergencies. The incumbent is expected to maintain a high standard of physical fitness and hand and eye coordination to maintain his or her semi-annual qualification with his/her assigned firearm and annual qualification with his/her assigned departmental issued intermediate weapons.
Work Environment: The work environment regularly involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions (e.g., subject to possible physical attack or crowd conditions or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.)The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, such as high levels of noise in industrial settings, high temperatures in confined spaces, or severe weather conditions during extended periods of traffic and patrol duties. The employee may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, bullet resistant vests or shields.
