Duties
Performs preventive maintenance inspections and repairs to buildings, facilities and equipment utilizing skills in several trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical and painting.
Makes visual- examination and/or operational test to determine extent of repair or maintenance required.
Diagnoses problems, such as leaking roofs, water fixtures, broken windows, defective door operation, etc.
Plans and lays out the work and performs the following types of repair/maintenance tasks.
Makes simple repairs to restore wood or wood substitute items to a serviceable condition.
Tears out portions of walls for installation of doors, windows, machines, fixtures, etc.
Lays whole brick or stone in horizontal rows; Prepares surfaces for painting using such methods as sanding, wire brushing, etc.; and removes, cleans, unclogs, replaces, and seals defective parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems.
Loads, unloads, separates, stacks, and carries materials, supplies, and packages weighing from 40 pounds or more. Utilizes hand trucks or dollies.
Operates motor vehicle to transport materials and tools, at Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC).

To qualify for a Maintenance Worker, your resume and supporting documentation must support:
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is:
Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision (SOE): Perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as receive general guidance on assignments, which may include routine maintenance on heating, refrigeration and air units; carpentry; painting; masonry; plumbing; or electrical.
Selective Placement Factor: Must possess a valid state driver's license.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
The incumbent must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license and any Installation and/or DOD license required for the operation a variety of Material Handling Equipment (MHE). Applicants selected for this position will be required to undergo a driving test to be certified to operate a forklift. Failure to obtain and maintain a valid license and certifications will result in your in-eligibility for placement into this position or removal from this position.
Physical Effort: Requires considerable standing, stooping, and bending; works on ladders and scaffolds which require overhead work or in stretches, cramped or awkward positions. Considerable arm movements are required when nailing and using such tools as planers and hand saws. Occasionally may lift and carry items weighing about 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: Works in shop and outside in all kinds of weather. When working in shop, is subject to presence of sawdust, to cuts from hand or powered tools and danger from flying splinters and chips. Works on scaffolding and high ladders or rooftops when nailing and installing completed items. On an intermittent basis, the incumbent may be required to report for duty during the night or on weekends to perform snow or ice removal duties as a member of the DSCC snow removal crew. Duties require hand shoveling of snow form walks and steps, operation of walking and riding type snow blowers, tractor with bucket, and tractor with snow blade attachment, front end loader, or 5-ton dump truck with snow blade and salt spreader attachments. In anticipation of these duties, employee may be required to attend classes and be certified in the operation of the above vehicles and equipment.
