The Surgery Service Float LPN can serve as a responsible member of the Surgery Service Area department team and interact with patients, family members, professional and supportive personnel who provide patient care and with members of other services. The Surgery Service Float LPN GS-7 has the unique ability to adjust, or "float", between several different clinical areas across the nursing spectrum.

Duties

The Surgery Service Float LPN performs, reports and records assigned duties including but not limited to: 1) The Float Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is technically proficient and self-directed in initiating, performing, and completing complex practical nursing care to patients within Surgical Service Clinics. 2) The Float LPN GS-7 must demonstrate an exceptional degree of practical nursing knowledge and skills necessary for concentrated effort and self-direction in carrying out the most complex practical nursing care assignments within the Surgical Specialty Clinics for a Veteran population with a variety of health care needs. 3) The Float LPN GS-7 performs the functions of the LPN GS-6, is involved to a greater degree in developing and modifying patient treatment plans, and in addition, carries out more specialized patient care duties using independent technical judgement under minimal supervision which includes but is not limited to: Assisting in minor Urology and Podiatry clinic procedures Demonstrates advanced knowledge and skill in preparation, administration and documentation of commonly prescribed oral, topical, subcutaneous, intra-muscular medications permitted by the facility policies and procedures Performs venipuncture for blood draws and IV peripheral insertions. Can float to PAT to aid in blood draws as staffing allows. Trained and proficient in the Lab ordering system for collection and submission of specimens The Float LPN follows the VHA directive to prevent or delay amputations (PAVE) in the Veteran population due to neuropathic and vascular conditions. PAT the FEET is performed by the LPN. Palpate and characterize dorsal pedis and posterior tibial pulses, Assess for lesions, ulcers deformities, and/or color or temperature changes, and Test for loss of protective sensation. LPN will document findings, communicate changes to disciplines involved for follow-up care. 4) Trained in the set-up and safe use of the of the equipment specific to all the Surgery Service Clinics which includes but is not limited to: Urodynamic studies Bladder Scanners PAT the FEET is performed by the LPN. Palpate and characterize dorsal pedis and posterior tibial pulses, Assess for lesions, ulcers deformities, and/or color or temperature changes, and Test for loss of protective sensation Joint Injections Urologic medications that require injections; Eligard, Testosterone 5) Requires a general review of their work by the Surgery Clinic Nurse Manager for appropriateness and conformity with license, policies, and procedures Work Schedule: 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday thru Friday Compressed/Flexible:Not Available Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/25/2023. Basic Requirements: Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), previously known as the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Verification can be obtained from the State approving agency or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), previously known as the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), 61 Broadway, 33rd Floor, New York, NY 10006. Additional information may also be obtained from the ACEN Website. Exceptions include: Health care education in the military service or training in the military service which is accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which the individual is licensed as qualifying for full LPN/LVN licensure will be accepted as meeting the education requirements for VHA employment. VHA employees who were converted to appointments under 38 U.S.C. 7401(3) in implementation of Public Law 98-160, enacted November 21, 1983, and for VHA employees converted to appointments under 38 U.S.C. 7405 in implementation of Public Law 99-576, enacted October 28, 1986; and for their future personnel actions under this authority. The waiver will not apply to persons appointed under 38 U.S.C. 7401(3) or 7405 after these conversions. Individuals granted a license by a jurisdiction that does not require graduation from an approved school. Licensure. Full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or District of Columbia. English Language Proficiency. Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English. Grade Determinations: GS-7: Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-6 level or equivalent fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS-6 LPN/LVN. Applicants must also meet the following: Technical proficiency in initiating, performing and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations. Skill to carry out more specialized patient care duties, including assignments in selected, more complex inpatient and/or outpatient care settings. Ability to assist RN and/or MD/DO to appropriately prioritize overall patient care needs and adjust plans for care delivery. Ability to proactively assist the RN or MD/DO in addressing patient's needs for medication/treatments, accurately administering prescribed medications/treatments according to established policies/procedures and appropriately recording administration and patient's response to medications/treatments received. Knowledge and ability to recognize urgent or emergent patient care situations. Ability to proactively assist the RN or MD/DO in addressing patient's needs for medication/treatments, accurately administering prescribed medications/treatments according to established policies/procedures and appropriately recording administration and patient's response to medications/treatments received. Possesses comprehensive practical nursing skills in specialized procedures and practices to serve as a resource person for other staff in organizing and implementing more complex/specialized patient care. Supports the RN or MD/DO in monitoring the practice of unlicensed nursing or non-medical staff in patient care delivery. Work of considerable difficulty and responsibility is performed under general supervision. Actively seeks out educational opportunities to enhance nursing knowledge and skills, and providing leadership in assisting other staff improve and advance their nursing practice. Preferred Experience: One year of previous Endoscopy Procedure experience References: VA Qualification Standards in VA Handbook 5005/3, Part II, Appendix G13. Physical Requirements: Applicant must possess the ability to do the following: heavy lifting and carrying, 45 pounds and over; pulling, pushing and reaching above the shoulder; walking, standing, kneeling and repeated bending.
