These Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography) positions are in Specialty services at the VA Medical Center in Manchester, NH. One position is full-time, at 40 hours per week and one position is part-time, at 20 hours per week.

Duties

The Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography) reports to the Chief of Medicine while working under the guidance of the Cardiology providers. In the absence of the supervisor and technical director the incumbent may be temporarily appointed as Lead Sonographer for the necessary time frame. Duties included but not limited to: Operating diagnostic equipment to graphically record the position and motion of the heart walls or the internal structure of the heart and neighboring tissue by the echo obtained from beams of ultrasonic waves directed through the chest wall. Carrying out the most complex laboratory procedures such as real-time 3D cardiac ultrasounds utilizing on-line and offline computer enhancement technology and 3D reconstruction technology. Perform real time 3-Dimensional cardiac ultrasound utilizing on-line and off-line computer enhancement and reconstruction technology, 3-Dimensional Q-Lab analysis, and 3D cropping tools. Provide training and supervision to students in cutting-edge modalities. Perform basic echocardiograms as well as complex procedures such as stress exercise and dobutamine echocardiograms, saline contrast studies, contrast echocardiography, research protocols, valve cases, and assist with transesophageal echocardiograms. Assist the supervisor in writing lab and scanning procedures, protocols and policies for Quality Assurance and IAC accreditation, in addition to assisting with special projects and database operations. Varied administrative, staff development and supervisory functions, which may require problem solving, communication and writing skills. Qualifications

The Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography) is responsible for performing echocardiography exams which range from the routine to the complex in all echocardiography modalities. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). GRADE DETERMINATION: In addition to the basic requirements to qualify for the GS-9, the following experience and skills must be met. (a) Experience - at least one (1) year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level GS-8, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of echocardiography services. (b) In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): 1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to Echocardiography. *2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. 3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. *4. Ability to manage and supervise employees. *5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training. KSAs 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for all positions at this level. KSAs 4 and 5 are to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment. Preferred Experience: A minimum of four (4) years experience as a full-time echocardiographer, demonstrating advanced knowledge, skill and abilities for all modalities of echocardiography scanning and information analysis is preferred and at least a two (2) year degree from an accredited Echocardiography program and be a board registered echo sonographer with ARDMS or CCI. References: VA Handbook 5005/15 Part II Appendix G27.The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-9. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-9. Physical Requirements: Physical standards are identified in VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
