This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), at the Lebanon VA Medical Center, within the Whole Health Department. The primary purpose of the Physiologist is to develop and conduct comprehensive exercise and health promotion programming to support Whole Health, MOVE Weight Management, and other programming.
Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Selects and administers physical performance measures for Whole Health and Move program activities using a wide range of physical fitness techniques and procedures
Develops and implements ongoing, individualized therapy treatment programs
Develops and updates exercise and fitness education curriculum programs and educational materials
Serves as organizations exercise and fitness education expert consultant
Writes and edits exercise and fitness education components of health care materials
Counsels patients in an outpatient setting to promote health and wellness through weight control
Educates patients on exercise plan and creates onsite or home-based program to meet individual needs
Makes recommendations for appropriate exercise equipment
Develops strategies to meet short, medium and long-range goals
Serves as the professional and technical advisor in the areas of exercise and fitness education
Motivates, monitors, and assists Veterans in developing and maintaining a routine program of physical exercise that complements their individually tailored Mission, Aspiration and Purpose or goals
Develops policy guidance that incorporates legislative mandates and public policy direction
Develops and implements computer programs for health promotion programs
Performs quality assurance duties
Performs all other duties as assigned

Qualifications
English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. ~AND~
To qualify for this position, you must meet the Basic Education Requirement for the job series and the minimum qualification requirement for the GS-11 level Physiologist position.
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a Bachelor's degree (or higher level degree) in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology. Courses such as anatomy; cytology; invertebrate and vertebrate zoology; embryology; entomology; animal, dairy and poultry husbandry; nutrition; genetics; and physiology may be used to meet the 24-semester-hour requirement in the basic animal sciences. Courses in physiology, animal or human physiology, cellular physiology or courses that were well oriented toward animal or human physiology, e.g., some advanced courses in biochemistry, are qualifying as animal physiology courses. Courses in related fields such as cytology and microbiology (including microbial physiology) may also be qualifying, provided the course work dealt directly with the application of scientific principles underlying animal physiology or with the methodology and techniques applied in animal physiology work. In addition to meeting the English Language Proficiency and Basic Education Requirement above, to qualify for this position at the GS-11 level, you must meet one of the following:
Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-9) in the Federal service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Physiologist, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes assisting in developing, designing and conducting exercise programs for patients; conducting exercise, strength, flexibility and balance testing to develop personalized exercise prescriptions; selecting, administering and interpreting physical performance tests in order to assess physical function; supporting the program's clinical activities, particularly in the area of age-related clinical or epidemiologic changes. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~
Education: Successfully completed three (3) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree that provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of a Physiologist. This education must have been obtained in an accredited in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Combination: A combination of successfully completed graduate level education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as described above, which may be used to meet total experience requirements for this grade level. This education portion must include graduate courses that provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of a Physiologist and must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. *This position requires maintaining Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: Exercise physiology is a vocation that involves a wide range of physical demands from sedentary work, sitting in a standard office setting, to moderate to heavy physical demands which include the ability to lead exercise classes, move exercise equipment, and transfer patients in an emergency setting when necessary, regular and recurring exercise exertion with long periods of standing, bending, walking and periods of assisting patients with transfers. Demonstration of various exercise therapy procedures requires good physical conditioning.
Work Environment: The work performed will be in a combination of an office cubical, gym, exercise fitness room, classrooms, and individual counseling rooms. The Physiologist will travel to VA Community Clinic locations.
