This position is located at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.

Duties

This is a bargaining unit position. This position is represented by AFGE. Please note that as provided for in the AFGE/VA Master Agreement the FIRST area of consideration for this position will be permanent employees of the local facility in which this position is being filled and the SECOND area of consideration will be all other eligibles. This position entails a full range of buildings and maintenance skills for the Fort Snelling National Cemetery. All maintenance activities will be accomplished on site apart from some building/equipment inspections done by qualified contracted professionals. Serves as the Maintenance Mechanic responsible with the overall maintenance for all buildings, utilities, roads, curbs, irrigation, heating and cooling units, including but not limited to preventive care, repair, remodeling, installing, as required by the National Cemetery. Independently determines repairs needed, performing, or assigning the work with little or no supervision. Incumbent must possess the knowledge and ability to apply specialized work in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, masonry, irrigation, and painting fields. Operates various shop equipment such as electrical tracking locator, digital and analog multimeters, die and tap sets, optical transit and level, generators, compressors, hydraulic scaffolding, spray painters (air and airless), power drive pipe threader and cutter, power cut off and chop saws. Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement,09/20/2023. Your background must demonstrate work involved in the full range of building and maintenance trades to include carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, pest control, asphalt repairs, etc. This includes repair and preventive maintenance of irrigation systems, maintaining and repairing buildings and physical structures, facilities, and utilities using hand and power tools. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Physical Requirements: Work is carried out in a wide variety of positions and areas. Work may be performed overhead, in tight quarters or underground, requiring stretching, kneeling, bending, stooping, crawling, and doing tasks while in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Lifts up to 50 pounds. Can lift over 50 pounds with assistance from employees and/or tools. Working Conditions: Incumbent works inside and outside. Work may be performed above the ground, atop buildings and structures, or below ground level in tight, cramped quarters for repairs of sprinkler systems, etc. Inside work is performed where it is drafty, noisy and fumes from paint and other chemicals may be present, along with wood, brick, and masonry dust present in the air. There is frequently exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, burns, and strains. Work performed outdoors is in all types of inclement weather, including snowstorms, extreme heat, and rain. Due to the extremely sensitive nature of the work at a cemetery, which requires involvement with grieving individuals, mental and emotional stability is always required. Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drugs use prior to appointment.
