This is a general Maintenance Mechanic (Structures) position, in the Maintenance Section of Engineering Service at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS). The Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS) consists of two inpatient campuses located at Little Rock and North Little Rock, Arkansas. The Electrician performs work at both locations.
Duties
Duties:
Operates such tools as air hammers, drills, and electric saws for cutting tile, brick, and blocks.
Must have a working knowledge of the tools, equipment operations, basic trade practices,
and be familiar with the names and uses of various masonry and plaster materials.
Knowledge in operating and using power and hand tools and other woodworking equipment such as portable drills, clippers, joiners, shavers, temenos, sanders, routers, power actuated nailers, combustions type saws, screw fasteners, drill press, and table saws.
Knowledge and skill to frame(layout)walls, rough openings for doors and windows, install block and brick, patch and paint.
Plan work and determine methods and techniques to be used.
Uses skilled techniques to construct, install, repair, and reproduce wooden historic building elements on frame, timber, log, or single-wall structures that require close tolerance fits and structural soundness.
Knowledge to measure for layouts such as those required to construct footings for structural foundations and construct concrete forms and related structures with little or no supervision.
Knowledge in determining the proper grade, size, and type of lumber or wood substitute material required for the job.
Knowledge of architectural drawings and blueprints. Ability to interpret specifications, footnotes, and dimensions on drawings.
Requests PM numbers, following procedures established by Engineering Service, for newly installed equipment, where maintenance is the responsibility of the incumbent, including equipment installed by contract.
Knowledge of the safe use of both hand and power tools within the carpentry, mason and painting career fields.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 07:30 am-4:00 pm. (subject to change based on the needs of the Agency)

Physical Requirements: Incumbent makes repairs from ladders, scaffolding and platforms to reach equipment in out-of-the way places. A great amount of physical effort is required in the application of plaster on ceilings and walls which requires the use of tools overhead and above shoulder height. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Occasionally lifts and carries items over 90 pounds. When working on ladders and scaffolds, must be able to climb and carry tools and materials.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
