About the Position: Position(s) will be filled under the Department of the Army Pathways Intern Program. Click here for more information on Pathways program participation. This is a Pathways developmental position leading to non-competitive conversion to the next level of training which is based on organizational needs. The specific phase and target occupation to which the trainee may advance to is a Power Plant Electrician A or a Power Plant Shift Operator.

Duties

Pathways Internship positions provide for development and training. Assignments become more responsible as incumbent increases knowledge and skills through work experience and academic training. At the full-performance level, you will be expected to: Receive on-the-job training from journeyman or higher grade powerplant personnel. The work increases in difficulty, complexity, and responsibility as the incumbent gains experience and demonstrates a full comprehension of assigned work. Perform repetitive routine work and receives detailed oral or written instructions depending on the complexity of the assignment.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • Required to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Position is a Testing Designated Position under the U. S. Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Civilian Drug Testing Program.
  • Required to sign a mobility agreement.
  • Require the incumbent to pass pre-employment and regular physical screenings to determine fitness for duty.
  • A Pathways Intern Program participant agreement must be completed between the Pathways Program participant and USACE.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: Students who are eligible for participation in the Department of the Army Internship Program For this internship, you must be able to work full time when not attending classes (i.e., summers, fall and spring breaks, etc.) This intern position is designed to prepare a student trainee for employment after graduation as a Power Plant Electrician A or a Power Plant Shift Operator. Interns will be assigned tasks designed to increase familiarity with the target occupation in a real-world work environment. Note: Salary depends upon duties to be performed, the curriculum, and qualifications of the student. Students employed may be eligible for pay increases as they progress in their work and upon recommendation of their supervisor. Trainee I $37.50 Trainee II $41.14 Trainee III $44.79 Trainee IV $48.43 Power Plant Electrician A or Mechanic A $52.08 Power Plant Shift Operator $56.77 Education: To be eligible for the Pathways Student Internship Program, you must be currently enrolled or have been accepted for enrollment in a qualifying educational institution and am seeking an associate's degree in an Industrial or Engineering Technology program or other similar appropriate degree program on a full or half-time basis, as defined by the educational institution. 1. Must be accepted into a technical college or university. 2. Must be enrolled in the technical college or university Co-op program. This requires that the student be enrolled in one of the Industrial or Engineering Technology programs, or other similar appropriate degree program, and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. 3. Must be in an Associate Degree Program and shall have at least one year remaining to receive their degree. You must also be able to meet the Minimum Qualifications (Screen out Element below) Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Aptitude and Interest for Learning Trade Theory and Practice: Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. - Skilled in performing a wide variety of simple routine manual tasks. - Possess the potential to learn and develop higher level skills. - Able follow verbal instructions to complete work assignments safely and follow directions to complete work in progress. - Work on own initiative under general supervision subject to occasional inspection. Additional conditions of Employment: Physical Effort: Work tasks require that the incumbent be capable of rapid simultaneous mental and muscular coordination in conjunction with hand and eye coordination to operate switches and controls in accordance with meter indications. In order to perform the maintenance, inspection and operation of power station equipment the incumbent may lift and carry heavy objects, climb and reach above the shoulders, stand, sit, crawl and kneel for prolonged periods of time and performs repeated bending. Working Conditions: Most duties are performed within the confines of a Power Plant. Job duties may be required on the generator and turbine floor, spillway and switchyard as circumstances dictate. Some exposure to moderate discomforts such as noise, heat, cold, moving, and rotating equipment can be expected. This position requires occasional travel outside the normal duty locations for training activities, operational familiarization of other power plants, and other activities.
