Duties
The Cape Canaveral Space Force Museum preserves the hardware and spirit of America's ventures into space. It collects, restores, preserves, and interprets the rich history of America's space and missile programs. Since 1966 the Museum has introduced millions of visitors to the history of Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Patrick Space Force Base, and the Eastern Range. The Museum shares this history with diverse audiences through a wide array of outreach initiatives. Through contemporary collecting and future expansion planning, the Museum continues to interpret the expanding story of the U.S. Space Force through time and space.
The Museum Curator should be able to coordinate and execute a variety of projects for the Museum in a timely manner and with a keen eye to detail. They need to support every facet of artifact collections management, from research and documentation to acquisition, accession, and presentation. Exhibit development and facility management are also essential oversight functions of the position. The Museum Curator must also present the history of America's space and missile programs through tours, briefings, and community speaking events to diverse audiences. They will assist in managing the museum archives and reference library, as well as provide guidance for the Museum Volunteer Association.
Key Skills and Abilities:
1. Demonstrated accomplishments as a museum professional.
2. Knowledge of industry standards within the museum field, especially in regard to artifact collections management.
3. Capability of delivering results within Department of Air Force (DAF) Heritage Program regulations, policies, and standards.
4. Knowledge of aerospace history and USAF/USSF influence on aeronautical history.
5. Ability to communicate in an effective and engaging way.
6. Familiar with Microsoft Suite, relational databases, and design software.
7. Knowledge of exhibit planning, development, and installation techniques.
Ideal candidate:
- Forward-thinking, problem-solving, solution-oriented, team player, with strong research and writing skills
- Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred in history, public history, museum studies, or similar field
- Professional museum experience desired
- Adaptable to varied work environments and evolving schedules- Ability to take initiative and work independently
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship Required
- Work may occasionally require travel away from normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
- This position is eligible for situational telework (2-4 days per pay period).
- PCS and incentives are not authorized.
Qualifications
Degree: museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field.
or
Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
or
Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in A above.
