The Telemetry Health Technician serves as a member of the health care team providing continuous monitoring of the cardiac telemetry central monitoring station for the PCU and provides clinical and administrative support in a wide variety of patient care related activities. Incumbent must possess personal qualities, desire and attitude necessary to adapt rapidly changing demand on time and workload and have necessary skills to perform specific task/tests/monitoring to meet healthcare needs.

Duties

MAJOR DUTIES: Observe, analyze and record the cardiac rhythms of patients monitored via the cardiac telemetry centralized monitoring station. Record ECG strips and vital signs representative of changes in patients status and reports changes to the RN/LVN caring for the patient; Recognize and document arrhythmias; report to the RN/LVN in a timely manner; Leave the central telemetry monitoring room only when properly relieved, application of telemetry leads/pack; telemetry monitoring and completion of documentation, PI/QA process; Document and maintain telemetry patient logs and related data; detect and report all equipment malfunctions and/or loss of ECG monitor signal to nursing personnel and, when appropriate, to biomedical engineers/graphic control; Document nature of the problem in the telemetry equipment problem log; Includes information in report to oncoming personnel. Perform phlebotomy/blood draws; perform 12-lead ECGs, perform patient care assignments which require skill and knowledge of specific patient conditions. Procedures include but are not limited to obtaining and recording vital signs, measuring and recoding intake and output, blood glucose monitoring and recording, providing all aspects of ADL to include patient bath, bed-making, turning/positioning, oral care, feeding, toileting, ambulating, transporting, and post-mortem care. Specific technical duties include but are not limited to: non-sterile dressing changes; set-up and application of SCDs; enema administration; colostomy care; application of heating/cooling blanket or packs; oral suctioning; specimen collection, and other procedures as specified in Nursing Policy. Institute CPR Assist in all hospital codes as assigned Provide 1:1 observation of patients with special needs Reinforce patient education provided by the nurse or physician on patient's role in various procedures, safety measures, equipment set-up and use, and on aspects of discharge teaching Enter patient information into the medical record following documentation policies and guidelines Maintain unit equipment, cleanliness, and safety as assigned KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION Extensive knowledge of wide range of cardiac arrhythmias, effects on patients, and treatment options. Extensive knowledge of the telemetry equipment, including transmitters, central telemetry monitoring station, printers, trouble-shooting, lead placement, and patient preparation. Extensive knowledge of baseline/normal conditions, ability to recognize and react to changes in condition in accordance to policy. Knowledge sufficient to understand body structure, function, illness, and basic disease process. Knowledge of vascular anatomy sufficient to be competent in phlebotomy. Knowledge and skill of specific treatments and procedures. Knowledge of specific equipment function. Communication skills to support effective communication with patients, families, nurses, medical staff, and the interdisciplinary team. Computer reading and writing skills to support documentation/charting. Knowledge of basic concepts of dealing with patients with disturbed behavior. Understanding of human relationships between patients, families, and personnel. Knowledge of the impact of disease and illness on these relationships. Working knowledge of the principles of customer/patient satisfaction. Reports all equipment malfunctions and/or loss of ECG monitor signal to nursing personnel and, when appropriate to biomedical engineers. Work Schedule: Permanent Full-time. Compressed work scheduled. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to knowledge of a wide range of cardiac arrhythmias, effects on patients and treatment options while using telemetry equipment, including transmitters, central monitoring station, lead placement, patient prep and printers, trouble-shooting equipment when issues occur; using automated systems for documentation and patient charting; AND utilizing customer service skills when serving patients with varying mental behaviors, patient families and medical center personnel. There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.
