You will serve as the Supervisory Security Specialists for the Police Service with the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, American Lake Division, in Tacoma, Washington.

Duties
You will perform duties as he Deputy Chief of Police and report directly to the Chief of Police.
You will be responsible for assisting the Chief with the operation, direction, and control of the law enforcement and physical security activities of the VA Puget Health Care System.
You will provide extensive support in the management of physical security of assets, information, buildings, and people.
You will be responsibility for the management, operation, direction, and control of Police Service's law enforcement and physical security functions and its off-site properties 24 hour a day, 7 day a week basis.
You will observe, evaluate, and prepare reports on the performance of department personnel.
You will develop programs to alter the behavior of employees whose work performance is below acceptable standards.
You will assign and explain work requirements to subordinate supervisors for new or changed programs to meet police functions, goals, processes, skills, and needs.
You will develop solutions to continuing problems in the quality of work and operating effectiveness and take or recommend necessary corrective actions.
You will hear grievances and serious employee complaints to resolve or recommend solutions.
You will review serious disciplinary cases involving Police Service employees and recommend appropriate actions to higher level management.
You will perform other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Shift work, 8, 10, 12 Hours as needs of the service.

Physical Requirements: The position is required to exert considerable and strenuous physical effort on a regular basis while performing the functions of the position. These functions are normally performed while the position conducts security surveys and inspections, which require crawling in unusually confined building areas. May be called upon to defend themselves and members of staff, patients or the public against physical attack and may be required to exercise deadly force if necessary. Requirements of the position include maintaining firearms qualifications, climbing flights of stairs, carrying heavy equipment/patients during emergencies, running, bending, stooping, physical restraint of aggressive persons, being subjected to assaults by persons evading arrest. Inspections and audits of security systems, constructions sites, and full searches require the performance of duties in a variety of inclement weather conditions walking, crawling in wooded or over-grown field conditions in all elements of seasonal weather.
Work Conditions: The work is primarily performed in an office-like setting. However, there is the potential for dangerous situations to occur at VA installations to include physical assaults, assaults involving various hidden and open weapons, including firearms, knives, clubs, etc. Without knowledge of the medical history of persons, the position is responsible for physically interacting with aggressive persons. In addition, there can be exposure to moderate discomfort and unpleasantness during adverse weather conditions.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement
GS-12 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: assisting with the operating, directing, and controlling law enforcement and physical security activities; assessing situations and determining appropriate responses; responding to active threat situations; delegating work and evaluating performance of police personnel; providing training on equipment and security systems; conducting arrests, investigating criminal activities, and protecting crime scenes; and ensuring the safety of staff and visitors while on facility property. This experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit.
