Duties
This position is physically located in the United States Attorney's Office of the Middle District of Florida (USAO - MDFL) in Tampa, Florida, but falls organizationally within the United States Capitol Police (USCP), Office of the General Counsel (OGC), General Law Division in Washington, DC. The position provides support to the Special Assistant U.S. Attorney (SAUSA) and Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) staff in the USAO-MDFL, in a variety of litigation activities related to the prosecution of federal crimes, as well as legal issues and activities identified by the General Counsel, and the Deputy General Counsel, General Law Division, and attorneys in USCP OGC.
The incumbent serves as a paralegal specialist with responsibility for performing legal research, legal writing, preparation and management of voluminous evidence and discovery and a variety of case support duties. The work requires discretion and independent judgment in the application of specialized knowledge of particular laws, regulations, precedents or agency practices and directly affects the outcome of USAO-USCP related cases, and other USAO cases. The incumbent utilizes independent judgment and discretion in carrying out assignments, and is responsible for maintaining strict confidentiality of information within the USAO-MDFL, and the USCP-OGC.
Using an in-depth knowledge of the application of various laws, court and/or administrative decisions and interpretations related to federal crimes, performs substantive research, evaluation and analysis of a variety of specialized legal topics and points of law. Using multiple online legal systems, researches state and federal statutes, legal and factual issues and any other source of information pertinent to the resolution of an issue. Assists SAUSA and AUSAs with review, organization, and production of discovery materials. Drafts initial legal and administrative briefs, USAO motions, oppositions to defense motions and correspondence for SAUSA or AUSA review. As required, prepares and organizes trial exhibits, documents, memoranda, reports and correspondence relating to cases for review by the SAUSA or AUSAs.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.
For the CP-10/GS-12 you must have one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the CP-09/GS-11 which is in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled, and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience is defined as experience of the following:
Examining, preparing, and processing a variety of technical legal documents.
Obtain needed information from files, law enforcement agencies, or other sources.
Reviewing incoming material and independently determining the need for assembly and preparation of a variety of legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, and subpoenas.
Providing assistance to attorneys in trial preparation by performing duties such as independently compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists.
Maintaining calendar of assigned active cases. Track's filing, hearing, and trial dates, and scheduling conferences and interviews.
Producing a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications.
