This position is located within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Police Service (PS). The mission of the PS is to serve and protect Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, visitors, and others who frequent VA facilities. Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Directs subordinate Police Officers engaged in law enforcement responsibilities.
Works in collaboration with the Police Supervisor carrying out PS's overall mission where most of the work is performed on Departmental property. This includes any properties owned, leased, or licensed when consistent with Federal law, regulation, VA policy, and operatipnal guidance.
Directs law enforcement assignments to preserve peace; to prevent, detect, and investigate crimes; to arrest or apprehend violators; and to assist citizens in emergencies, including the protection of civil rights.
Plans work schedules and sequence of operations daily to assure an even flow and distribution of work, the expeditious handling of priority cases, and meeting of schedules and deadlines.
Revises work schedule to meet changes in workload considering factors such as peak loads; availability of manpower, and processing time -requirements.
Assigns work to subordinate Police Officers based on considerations of such factors as difficulty and requirements of assignments; availability, capability, experience and special qualifications of employees; and other resources available.
Responds to highly dangerous and active crimes in progress and makes independent decisions to take/direct/coordinate immediate steps to preserve life and property.
Prepares performance standards; reviews work in progress or upon completion; analyzes logs and activity reports or other data to ascertain problems in accuracy, adequacy, adherence to procedures, etc., and takes corrective action as necessary.
Prepares formal requests to fill Police Officer vacancies or to recruit additional personnel to meet workload requirements. Selects or participates with the supervisor in the selection of new officers. Prepares formal requests and recommendations for promotions, reassignments, other status changes, or recognition of outstanding performance of assigned employees.
Approves and disapproves of routine requests for leave and recommends action in unusual leave usage cases. Receives formal grievances, resolving those that can be resolved at the first full supervisory level.
Formulates training plans for assigned Police Officers; conducts or coordinates informal training to broaden employee skills and to provide back-up skills through cross-training; and recommends formal training courses.
Trains Police Officers in the use of specialized vehicles and equipment, policies and procedures in support of law enforcement and security operations.
Work Schedule: As discussed and decided upon with Chief of Police. Must be willing to work nights, holidays, and weekends.

Physical Requirements: The work requires, on a regular and recurring basis, considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as running, frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds. It requires stamina, physical agility, dexterity, and the strength to pursue, apprehend or detain persons who are often uncooperative, assaultive, and/or armed.

- New VA Police Officers are required to successfully complete a 10-week VA Law Enforcement Training Center POST Academy at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, AR.
- Applicants must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely.
- VA Police Officers must be able to achieve and maintain mandatory firearm and intermediate weapons qualifications/certifications.
- Applicants must be at least 21 years of age as of the closing date of this vacancy announcement.

GS-08 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: supervising/leading and providing guidance/direction to Police Officers in their duties in response to potential threats of violence, detecting criminal activity, fire and other emergencies; enforcing federal, state, and local laws; making arrests; conducting foot and vehicle patrol; maintaining control of a scene or incident; taking statements from witnesses/suspects and advising them of their rights; preparing detailed reports of criminal offenses, violations, incidents, and citations issued; interrogating suspects; and applying all correct rules of search and seizure. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Experience as a security guard or corrections officer is generally not qualifying. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week.
There is no educational substitution for the GS-08 level.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
