This position is located at the Cheyenne River Service Unit, Great Plains Area Indian Health Service. The purpose of this position is to function as Chief Optometrist with full program responsibility for the service unit Optometry Program, provides supervision to subordinates, and provides direct, comprehensive, primary, preventive and therapeutic medical and optometric care to individuals.
*There may be Government housing available for this position, depending on availability.
Duties
Independently diagnosis all optometric and ocular problems through external and internal physical evaluation of the eye and surrounding tissue.
Refers patients requiring complex medical surgery or services to appropriate medical specialty.
Provides vision and eye care education and counseling to patients.
Takes complete history from the patient and/or family member to determine risk of eye disease. Records all patient care examinations, assessments, procedures and care plans.
Supervises subordinates, develops and monitors the eye care budget, devises, and implements projects.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Education: Applicants must have a Doctor of Optometry degree from an educational program that is accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (external link) (ACOE) at the time the degree was obtained.
Licensure: Applicants must have received a passing score on the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (external link) (NBEO) examinations and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice optometry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of professional specialized experience as an optometrist equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Oversee Optometry Program in its entirety, provide direct, comprehensive medical/optometric care to patients; provide supervision to Optometry staff by assigning work, evaluating work performance, interviewing candidates for positions and ensuring staff follow accreditation standards.
Or, one year completion of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training.
